Job description

About us

MBS Operations GmbH is a trusted service integrator for critical communication services and a provider of managed gateways. For more than 40 years, we have been operating data and voice communications via satellite and data networks—both on Earth and in space. Our expertise ranges from traditional satellite services to customized applications in the New Space sector.

Government and business customers worldwide trust in MBS’s integrity and innovative strength. This is also because we have our own fail-safe infrastructure in Germany.

As Ground Segment Engineer – Satellite Communications (m/f/d), you operate at the interface between classical RF engineering, IP-based signal processing, and multi-orbit gateway operations. You actively drive the transformation of our ground infrastructure and serve as the technical authority for complex satellite, RF, and network projects – from antenna to virtualized signal processing.

We operate highly complex technical systems and are looking for individuals who take ownership and drive solutions. You are able to dive deep into technical details while simplifying complex topics in a way that enables non‐technical stakeholders to make informed decisions.

Your tasks
  • RF Engineering: Technical responsibility for the end‑to‑end signal chain (antenna to IP), including link budgeting, frequency planning, and antenna design
  • Technological Transformation: Driving the digitalization of signal chains (RF‑over‑IP, DIFI/VITA 49.2) and decoupling antenna systems from signal processing
  • Networks & Systems: Design and integration of IP‑based infrastructures for digital IF transport (multicast, QoS, deterministic routing)
  • Teleport Operations: Operation, maintenance, and optimization of teleport infrastructure (including power, cooling, containerized and backup systems), anomaly analysis, complex fault diagnostics, and ensuring link performance
  • Monitoring & Control: Setup and operation of the AI‑supported Teleport Management Support System (TMSS), including NMS configuration, alarm modeling, runbooks, and continuous development of monitoring and analytics tools
  • Gateway Engineering: Engineering of managed gateways for LEO/MEO constellations
  • Operational Excellence: Proactive health checks, early anomaly detection, and continuous performance optimization
  • Processes & Quality: Definition and documentation of operational processes, as well as review of incident, change, and problem records (including MOPs, backout plans, and root cause analysis)
Your profile
  • Working Style & Mindset:
    • Strong hands‑on mentality and ownership – you proactively take on challenges, assume responsibility, and drive solutions through to completion
    • You are able to communicate complex technical concepts in a target‑oriented manner – from deep RF details to clear, concise explanations for non‑technical stakeholders
    • Strong communication skills, sound decision‑making, and clear, structured documentation are second nature to you
  • Education & Experience: Degree in information technology, communications engineering, electrical engineering, or a comparable qualification, combined with several years of experience in satellite communications, ideally in ground station or gateway operations/engineering
  • RF & SatCom Expertise: Solid knowledge of high‑frequency engineering (link budgets, signal paths, antenna measurements, satellite tracking)
  • Core Technical Skills:
    • Troubleshooting, operation, and maintenance of RF equipment
    • Dimensioning of active RF components (HPA, LNA/LNB, UPC, BUC/BDC, etc.) and network management systems
    • IP routing and networking
    • Experience with RF measurement equipment (e.g., spectrum analyzers, power meters) and data‑driven RF analysis
    • Testing and optimization of gateway antennas and sites
  • Processes & Methods: Experience with ITIL‑related processes (incident, change, and problem management, including tickets, MOPs, backout plans, RCA)
  • Nice‑to‑have: Experience with LEO systems, Digital IF / RF‑over‑IP, virtualized signal processing, systems engineering, end‑to‑end testing, and basic antenna mechanics
  • Language skills required: German – C1, English – C1
We offer
  • Freedom, trust, and responsibility for your assigned tasks in an international environment with flat hierarchies
  • Flexible working hours through a flexitime arrangement
  • Extensive equipment including a company mobile phone and laptop
  • Pleasant commute to work thanks to anti‑cyclĀical rush‑hour traffic and free company parking spaces directly in front of the office building as well as charging facilities for electric vehicles
  • Company‑owned parking spaces directly in front of the office building, as well as free charging stations for electric vehicles at the main site in Usingen
  • Long‑term support in acquiring new skills through professional development and training
  • Permanent employment contract with 30 days of vacation and employer contributions to the company pension scheme
  • Further financial benefits: benefit card with a monthly allowance and motivational leasing for electric cars supported by employer subsidies
  • Of course coffee, water and a delicious canteen with freshly prepared food
