How much do satellite fpga jobs pay per year?

As of Sep 8, 2026, the average yearly pay for satellite fpga in the United States is $147,315.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $130,000.00 and $167,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a Satellite FPGA engineer?

A Satellite FPGA engineer is a specialist who designs, develops, and tests Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) used in satellite systems. FPGAs are integrated circuits that can be configured after manufacturing, allowing for flexibility and adaptability in satellite communications, data processing, and control systems. These engineers work on creating reliable, radiation-hardened solutions suitable for the harsh conditions of space, ensuring the satellite's onboard electronics function correctly and efficiently. Their work is critical in modern spacecraft, where adaptability and performance are essential.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Satellite FPGA engineer?

To excel as a Satellite FPGA Engineer, you need expertise in digital design, VHDL/Verilog programming, and a solid background in electronics or electrical engineering, often with a relevant degree. Familiarity with FPGA development tools like Xilinx Vivado or Intel Quartus, as well as knowledge of satellite communication protocols and radiation-hardened design, is important. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork set standout professionals apart in this field. These competencies are critical for designing reliable, high-performance FPGA solutions that operate successfully in demanding satellite environments.

What are some typical challenges Satellite FPGA engineers face when working on space-grade designs?

Satellite FPGA engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring designs are robust against radiation effects like Single Event Upsets (SEUs) and meeting strict power and thermal constraints due to the space environment. They must rigorously verify and validate their designs to comply with industry standards and customer requirements, often under tight project deadlines. Collaboration with systems, hardware, and software teams is crucial to ensure FPGA modules integrate seamlessly with the overall satellite system, and thorough documentation is essential for testing and future maintenance. Staying updated with evolving FPGA technologies and space qualification processes is also a key part of the role.

What is the difference between Satellite Fpga vs Satellite Engineer?

AspectSatellite FpgaSatellite Engineer
Required CredentialsHardware design certifications, FPGA development experienceEngineering degrees, satellite systems knowledge
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, FPGA development teamsField operations, satellite project teams
Industry UsageHardware development for satellite systemsSatellite system planning, integration, and testing

Satellite Fpga specialists focus on designing and implementing FPGA hardware for satellite systems, while Satellite Engineers oversee the entire satellite project, including system integration and operations. Both roles require technical expertise, but Satellite Fpga roles are more hardware-centric, whereas Satellite Engineers have broader responsibilities across satellite development and deployment.

Job description

Ready to make connectivity from space universally accessible, secure and actionable? Then you've come to the right place!
E-Space is bridging Earth and space to enable hyper-scaled deployments of Internet of Things (IoT) solutions and services. We are building a highly-advanced low Earth orbit (LEO) space system that will fundamentally change the design, economics, manufacturing and service delivery associated with traditional satellite and terrestrial IoT systems.
We're intentional, we're unapologetically curious and we're 100% committed to innovate space-based communications and deliver actionable intelligence that will expand global economies, protect space and our planet and enhance our overall quality of life.
The Staff Satellite FPGA Engineer will participate in all aspects of the development and test of avionics FPGA
RTL designs for E-Space satellites. The ideal candidate has 10+ years of experience in FPGA firmware development including RTL design, simulations, analysis, verification, and HW testing.
This position will report to the Director of Electrical Engineering and will work closely with the Electrical, Software, and Systems Engineering teams. The successful candidate will be based in our Saratoga, CA office.
What you will do:
  • The functions of this role include providing strategic direction and implementation in the following areas:
  • Own FPGA RTL development from blank sheet to flight.
  • Develop FPGA logical architecture and requirements in collaboration with other engineering
  • disciplines including defining HW/SW interfaces between fabric logic and processing subsystems.
  • Develop FPGA RTL code for Microsemi FPGAs and other manufacturer SoCs in either SystemVerilog or VHDL.
  • Perform design verification including simulations, test benches, timing analysis, and hardware testing.
  • Lead design reviews, demonstrate requirement traceability, and create documentation for FPGA operation and interfacing with other SW and FPGA systems.
  • Develop and participate in test campaigns ranging from unit level manual tests, unit automated tests, and system level tests.

What you bring to this role:
  • 10+ years of experience in FPGA RTL architecture, development, verification, deployment, and maintenance.
  • Skilled at SystemVerilog or VHDL.
  • Skilled in at least 1 scripting language (TCL, shell, Python, etc).
  • Skilled in verification techniques, and timing/stability analysis.
  • Proficiency in understanding PCB designs and reading schematics.
  • Proficiency in understanding embedded software.
  • Proficiency with AXI protocols (at least AXI4 family). โ€ข Knowledge of common bus interfaces (I2C, SPI, etc).
  • Demonstrated success working in a dynamic environment.

Bonus points for the following:
  • Master's degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent.
  • Expertise in implementing high speed digital communications interfaces.
  • Experience designing for space environments including radiation impacts and mitigation.
