What Is an SAP Developer?

An SAP developer is a computer engineer who is an expert in products made by SAP, a proprietary business software solution company. There are many different products that you can specialize in, including SAP Business Warehouse and Sybase mobile. Most SAP development is done in an in-house programming language, Advanced Business Application Programming. Job duties include the development of new applications for business technology and solutions. An SAP developer typically works as part of a team, designing new products and methods to improve business efficiency, productivity, and logistics.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a SAP Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a SAP Developer, you need strong programming skills in ABAP or SAPUI5, a solid understanding of SAP modules, and typically a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with SAP development tools, integration technologies, and certifications such as SAP Certified Development Associate are highly valued. Analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and clear communication help distinguish top performers in this role. These skills ensure the effective design, customization, and support of SAP solutions to meet business needs and drive organizational efficiency.

What are some common challenges faced by SAP Developers when working on large-scale implementation projects?

SAP Developers often encounter challenges such as integrating SAP solutions with legacy systems, managing complex customizations, and ensuring data consistency across modules. Coordinating with cross-functional teams—including business analysts, project managers, and end-users—can add to the complexity, especially when project requirements change. Staying updated with the latest SAP technologies and best practices is essential to address these challenges effectively and deliver robust, scalable solutions.

What are SAP Developers?

SAP Developers are IT professionals who specialize in designing, coding, and implementing software solutions within the SAP ecosystem. They work with SAP modules and programming languages like ABAP or SAPUI5 to customize and extend the functionality of SAP applications according to business requirements. SAP Developers often collaborate with business analysts and end-users to ensure the solutions meet organizational needs, and they may also be involved in system integrations, upgrades, and troubleshooting.

Job description

C5MI is not your typical consulting firm. We are a high-performance team of SAP and supply chain experts who solve complex, mission critical challenges for organizations that cannot afford failure.

We hire consultants who thrive in complexity, move fast, take ownership, and deliver under pressure. At C5MI, you will not be siloed or stuck in theory. You will be hands on, client facing, and directly influencing outcomes that matter.

Our culture rewards initiative, accountability, and continuous growth. This is a place where your expertise is valued, your work is meaningful, and your performance truly matters. If you're energized by learning through real-world challenges, collaborating with top-tier talent, and expanding your capabilities every day, C5MI is where strong consultants level up.

Position Summary: The Senior SAP Integration Developer is responsible for leading the technical design, development, testing, deployment, and lifecycle support of enterprise SAP integration solutions. This role owns complex integration architecture across on‑premise and cloud environments, enabling secure, scalable, and reliable system-to-system communication.

This position requires hands-on expertise with SAP CPI (Cloud Platform Integration) and SAP PI/PO and is not intended for junior-level practitioners. The Senior Developer acts as a technical leader and mentor, working closely with functional, technical, and business teams to deliver modern, API-led integration solutions aligned with enterprise standards and cloud strategy.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Lead the architecture, design, development, testing, deployment, and support of SAP integration solutions using SAP CPI (required) and SAP PI/PO
  • Design and implement cloud-based, API-first, and event-driven integrations across SAP and non-SAP platforms
  • Enable secure system-to-system communication and enterprise data exchange in hybrid (cloud and on‑prem) environments
  • Evaluate integration requirements and conduct feasibility, impact, and solution architecture assessments
  • Drive enterprise integration architecture planning and modernization initiatives
  • Ensure integration solutions comply with architectural standards, security controls, and project schedules
  • Develop and maintain detailed technical design documents, interface specifications, and operational runbooks
  • Serve as a subject matter expert and mentor, providing guidance on SAP CPI best practices, reusable patterns, and integration governance
  • Promote standardized, scalable, and future-ready API-based integration approaches
  • Lead post-release support activities, including issue resolution, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement
  • Collaborate with architects, functional teams, developers, and stakeholders to ensure high-quality delivery

Education, Training, and Experience:

  • 6+ years of SAP integration experience, including enterprise middleware and system integration development
  • Mandatory hands-on experience with SAP CPI (Cloud Platform Integration) in production environments
  • Strong experience with SAP PI/PO, including migration or co-existence strategies with CPI
  • Experience across the full integration lifecycle: design, development, testing, deployment, and support
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Information Technology, MIS, or a related technical field (or equivalent experience)
  • Experience supporting the Department of Defense or other federal agencies is highly desirable
  • U.S. Citizenship required to obtain and maintain government clearance
  • Proven ability to lead technical initiatives, influence architecture decisions, and mentor junior team members

Compensation:

In accordance with pay transparency law, the expected salary range for this position is $110,000 – $130,000 annually.
