Job description

SAP BTP / ABAP Migration Consultant
Start Date: Q2 2026
Duration: 6 12 Months + Extensions
Location: Hybrid Onsite as needed (Local Water District, United States)
Type: Contract
Industry: Utilities (Water / Public Sector)
Overview
Mako Professionals is supporting a local water district on a critical SAP modernization initiative focused on migrating legacy ABAP code from an on-premise environment into SAP BTP.
This effort is driven by a need to quickly transition existing functionality into the cloud while maintaining business continuity across a wide range of integrated systems. The initial phase will prioritize migration over full refactoring, with a follow-on phase focused on optimization and efficiency improvements within BTP.
We are seeking a hands-on SAP BTP / ABAP Consultant who can support large-scale code migration, ensure system connectivity, and position the environment for future enhancements.
Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and support the migration of legacy ABAP code from on-prem SAP systems into SAP BTP
  • Rewire and reconnect ABAP-based processes to external systems within the BTP environment
  • Ensure continuity of critical integrations including banking interfaces, Fuel Master, Bentec (benefits), and other third-party systems
  • Support connectivity across a large, distributed environment (200+ external endpoints/satellites)
  • Execute a "lift-and-shift" migration approach, moving code as-is where required to meet project timelines
  • Collaborate with functional and technical teams to validate system performance post-migration
  • Identify areas of inefficiency in migrated code and document opportunities for future optimization
  • Assist in planning for Phase 2 efforts focused on refactoring and performance improvements within BTP
  • Support testing efforts including integration testing and UAT to ensure system stability
Required Qualifications
  • 7+ years of SAP ABAP development experience
  • Hands-on experience with SAP BTP (Business Technology Platform), including extensions and integrations
  • Proven experience migrating or modernizing ABAP code from on-premise to cloud environments
  • Strong understanding of SAP integrations and external system connectivity
  • Experience working with complex system landscapes and multiple third-party interfaces
  • Ability to balance speed (migration) vs. long-term optimization (refactoring) decisions
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills in high-impact environments
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with ABAP on Cloud, RAP model, or BTP-based development frameworks
  • Familiarity with SAP Integration Suite (CPI) or PI/PO
  • Experience supporting utilities or public sector clients
  • Exposure to large-scale migration or transformation programs (S/4HANA or cloud-first initiatives)
  • Understanding of performance tuning and optimization strategies post-migration
Additional Notes
  • This role will focus on rapid migration in the initial phase, with a longer-term roadmap for optimization and refactoring
  • Strong emphasis on maintaining system connectivity and minimizing disruption to business operations
  • Local candidates preferred due to occasional onsite collaboration needs
