What is a SAP ABAP developer?

SAP ABAP Developers are IT professionals who specialize in developing applications and solutions within the SAP ecosystem using the ABAP (Advanced Business Application Programming) language. They design, code, test, and maintain programs that help organizations automate business processes in SAP systems. Their work often involves customizing standard SAP modules, integrating SAP with other systems, and troubleshooting technical issues. ABAP Developers play a crucial role in optimizing and enhancing SAP functionalities to meet specific business needs.

What does a SAP ABAP developer do?

As an SAP ABAP developer, your job is to program software using the ABAP programming language. In this role, your responsibilities include evaluating existing code, ensuring the software works on each computer your company uses, and communicating with relevant parties to ensure the final software is the best possible solution for their needs. You may also perform usability tests, provide technical support, and consult with employees from various departments. Many developers in this field work in teams, so the ability to coordinate your programming with other developers is essential to success. Like other programmers, SAP ABAP developers often program code in other languages as necessary.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a SAP ABAP developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a SAP ABAP Developer, you need strong programming skills in ABAP, a solid understanding of SAP modules, and typically a degree in computer science or a related field. Experience with SAP development tools like SAP NetWeaver, Eclipse IDE, and familiarity with SAP Fiori/UI5 and debugging tools is highly valued. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating with stakeholders and understanding business requirements. These competencies ensure efficient, high-quality customizations and seamless integration within SAP environments, driving business process improvements.

What are some common challenges faced by SAP ABAP developers when working on large-scale implementation projects?

SAP ABAP Developers often encounter challenges such as integrating custom code with existing SAP modules, managing performance optimization for complex reports and transactions, and ensuring code adheres to best practices and company guidelines. Coordinating with functional consultants and business analysts to translate business requirements into technical solutions can also be demanding, especially when requirements evolve. Effective communication and proactive testing are essential to minimize rework and ensure smooth project delivery.

A transformation maven with the skills to help clients meet the challenges of digitization. Your human superpower? Or you specialize in one or the other, our practice covers the functional & process side of SAP as well as the technical development & technical architecture. Additionally, you have the communication and people skills to inspire teams to bring their A-game.

The Work:

As an SAP Basis Senior Manager on SAP transformation projects, you will:

  • Define and own the end-to-end SAP platform strategy across complex, multi-workstream transformation programs - spanning S/4HANA Greenfield, Brownfield conversion, BTP/cloud extension, and AMS steady state - ensuring architectural coherence from design through hypercare and handover.

  • Lead enterprise-scale SAP landscape architecture decisions - including system consolidation, multi-tier HA/DR topology, SAP RISE vs. private cloud vs. hybrid positioning, Azure infrastructure right-sizing (Mv3), and network/security perimeter design.

  • Set platform engineering standards and governance frameworks - establishing Basis delivery methodology, tooling standards (Solution Manager, Focused Run, CCMS), transport governance policy, and incident/change management operating models across programs and accounts.

  • Own the commercial and delivery relationship for Basis platform scope on platform roadmaps, change order scoping, SLA negotiation, and continuous service improvement.

  • Represent the platform perspective in program governance - participating in steering committees, executive status reviews, and risk/issue forums; translating platform complexity into strategic clarity for senior client and internal leadership.

  • Minimum of 8 years experience in SAP Basis, with a minimum of three enterprise-scale S/4HANA transformation programs delivered in a Senior Platform leadership role.

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience/expertise across the full SAP Basis domain - HANA architecture, HA/DR, security/compliance, transport governance, monitoring operations, and cloud infrastructure - with the ability to set standards rather than follow them.

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience/proven track record managing complex, multi-geography SAP landscapes in both transformation and AMS contexts, including RISE engagements and hybrid cloud architectures.

  • Minimum of 3 years of demonstrated experience owning client relationships at CIO/IT Director level - including SLA accountability, commercial discussions, and strategic platform advisory.

  • Experience leading and developing teams of 20+ Basis professionals across multiple concurrent engagements.

  • Prior experience supporting the Chemicals & Natural Resources industry/clients

  • Strong executive communication and influencing skills - able to drive alignment across client leadership, Accenture delivery leadership, and SAP account teams.

  • You have a SAP certification in SAP Technology, HANA Administration, or SAP S/4HANA - and familiarity with SAP's evolving AI-native architecture (Joule, SAP Business AI Platform, SAP Knowledge Graph).

  • You have experience with SAP RISE commercial model - understanding shared responsibility boundaries, SAP-managed vs. customer-managed scope, and implications for AMS contract structuring.

  • You have familiarity with adjacent platform domains (SAP Integration Suite, SAP Event Mesh, SAP Data Sphere) sufficient to advise on cross-platform architecture decisions.

  • You have experience with hyperscaler-native tooling (Azure Monitor, Azure Advisor, AWS Systems Manager) in the context of SAP on cloud operations.
