Job Description Summary
Santa Fe College's Facilities Services supports the college's mission by creating environments that sustain the needs of the college community. The department maintains and enhances college facilities, grounds and infrastructure in a safe and responsible manner. SF's values reside directly in the department's dedication to quality service for students, employees, and the community.
The Groundskeeper is responsible for maintaining the aesthetic quality and appearance of Santa Fe College outdoor grounds and landscaping. The Groundskeeper is also responsible for identifying, selecting, mixing, and applying chemical or manual solutions for control of weeds, insects, and/or pests.
Job Description
Responsibilities and Duties Include:
  • Maintains grounds by cutting, mowing, edging, and trimming grass, plants, and shrubberies.
  • Plants flowers, trees and shrubs; transplants and mulches as necessary.
  • Prunes shrubs and trees using the appropriate technique according to the type of plant.
  • Keeps grounds free of debris, leaves, brush and weeds from areas such as walks, stairs, roadways, and parking facilities.
  • Identifies common landscape weeds and apply control measures.
  • Monitors and maintains the watering needs of the grounds.
  • Maintains college pathways and roads, cleaning drains, and sweeping and blowing debris.
  • Implements landscape improvement projects using appropriate plants and landscape material.
  • Operates equipment pertinent to completion of all grounds and landscape tasks including but not limited to, mowers, weed eaters, blowers, tractors, chain saws, and hand tools.
  • Mixes and sprays or spread fertilizers, herbicides, or insecticides onto grass, shrubs, or trees, using hand or automatic sprayers or spreaders.
  • May help with set-ups for College related functions.
  • Gathers and removes litter and trash from all areas of college grounds.
  • Promotes and adheres to all recognized safety practices and standards.
  • Works safely and effectively around the public.
  • Assists other trades as needed.
  • Complies with all published College Rules, procedures, guidelines, and laws/regulations governing public employees, including but not limited to those related to document retention and destruction, FERPA, and confidentiality.
  • Provides service excellence through courteous, informed, accessible, and professional engagement.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Reports to: Grounds Supervisor
QUALIFICATIONS
Required: A high school diploma or equivalent. Current Department of Environmental Protection applicator license for indoor/outdoor pest control must be obtained within six (6) months of employment if not already completed.
Additional Requirements: A criminal background check will be conducted. Applicants must have a valid Florida Class E Operator (driver's) license and be authorized to drive for the college.
Preferred: Prior experience maintaining large grounds.
