Clinical Nurse Educator - Surgical Services

Location: East Cooper Medical Center, Coastal Carolina Hospital, or Hilton Head Hospital

Position Summary

The Clinical Nurse Educator (CNE) for Surgical Services serves as an expert resource, educator, mentor, and consultant for nursing staff within Surgical Services. This role is responsible for supporting new hire onboarding, orientation, competency development, specialty education, and ongoing professional growth of nursing team members.

Working closely with clinical leaders and frontline staff, the CNE provides real-time education during clinical rounds, facilitates classroom and virtual learning experiences, develops educational programs, and promotes evidence-based practice to enhance patient outcomes and nursing excellence.

Travel

This role supports multiple facilities throughout the Novant Health South Carolina region and requires periodic travel between assigned locations.

What You'll Do

  • Facilitate onboarding, orientation, and competency validation for Surgical Services team members.

  • Provide real-time coaching and education during clinical rounds.

  • Design, develop, and deliver specialty-specific education programs for Surgical Services staff.

  • Teach instructor-led, virtual, and hands-on educational programs.

  • Support preceptors, charge nurses, and emerging nursing leaders.

  • Collaborate with department leadership to identify educational needs and implement improvement initiatives.

  • Promote evidence-based practice, clinical excellence, and patient safety standards.

  • Maintain educational records, competency documentation, and program evaluations.

  • Serve as a mentor and resource for professional development and specialty certification preparation.

What We're Looking For

  • Education: 4 Year / Bachelors Degree, required. Graduate of NLN accredited School of Nursing, required. BSN, required. Graduate Degree, preferred. MSN, preferred.

  • Experience: Minimum of three years of clinical practice in area of specialization (emergency department), required.

  • Licensure/Certification:

  • Current RN license in appropriate state, required.

  • RN prof cert in relevant specialty within 6 months of hire, required. CEN or CPEN accepted for this position.

  • TNCC or ENPC preferred

  • SANE experience a plus

  • Additional Skills Required:

  • Current and future trends/practice in area of responsibility; regulatory and governing standards, policies and procedures; information systems and software used in area of responsibility; equipment used in performing assigned duties; application of safety and infection control policies and procedures; team building, conflict management, and interpersonal relationship skills; principles of adult learning and teaching methods/models; effective classroom presentation style; decision making, project leadership and consultation, delegation and communication skills; understanding of customer needs and expectations and knowledge for improvement to exceed customer expectations; knowledge of research and EBP methodologies and analyses; ability to write effectively.

  • Certification is a requirement for the Clinical Nurse Educator role as it demonstrates commitment and expertise to the nursing profession. A certification within relevant clinical specialty is required for this role, and a list of certifications accepted can be obtained through the leadership of The Center for Professional Practice and Development at Novant Health.
