Job description

Sample Management Assistant

Location: Richmond, VA
Pay Rate: $18.30/hour

Position Summary

We are seeking a dependable and detail-oriented Sample Management Assistant to support laboratory operations by performing sample handling, inventory tracking, and administrative activities. This entry-level position provides an excellent opportunity to gain experience in a regulated laboratory environment while learning standard operating procedures (SOPs), sample management processes, and laboratory support functions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Receive, label, log, and track laboratory samples and standards according to established procedures.

  • Perform sample check-in, inventory management, storage, transportation, and check-out activities.

  • Provide administrative support to the Sample Management team and Sample Coordinator.

  • Maintain accurate documentation and inventory records in accordance with SOPs and laboratory requirements.

  • Communicate task status and sample updates to supervisors and laboratory personnel.

  • Follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), client requirements, and regulatory guidelines.

  • Participate in training on sample handling procedures, laboratory documentation, and storage requirements.

  • Assist in responding to environmental monitoring alarms as needed and support on-call responsibilities when assigned.

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.

  • Complete assigned tasks accurately while meeting productivity and quality expectations.

Qualifications

Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • 0–1 year of experience in laboratory support, sample handling, inventory, warehouse, manufacturing, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Word and Excel.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Ability to follow written procedures and maintain accurate documentation.

Preferred

  • Previous experience in a laboratory, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, healthcare, or regulated environment.

  • Experience with inventory tracking or administrative support.

  • Familiarity with SOPs and quality procedures.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.

  • Ability to maintain accurate records and documentation.

  • Good verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to follow detailed procedures with accuracy.

  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word and Excel).

  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment.

Work Environment
  • Laboratory support environment with routine handling of samples and laboratory materials.

  • Frequent standing, walking, and movement throughout the laboratory.

  • May occasionally lift or move laboratory materials in accordance with safety guidelines.

  • Training provided on laboratory procedures, documentation, and sample management processes.
