THE POSITION

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is seeking a motivated Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic to join the team at the Montgomery County Maintenance Organization. In this role, you will help keep essential equipment in reliable working condition to support safe travel throughout the county. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position supports the maintenance of diesel and construction equipment by performing diagnostics, repairs, inspections, and preventative care. The role helps ensure that vehicles and machinery remain safe, dependable, and ready for daily operations. As a Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic, you will perform the following duties:


  • Equipment Repair: Repair and overhaul trucks, cars, tractors, sweepers, mixers, and loaders
  • Preventative Maintenance: Perform diagnostics, tune-ups, tire changes, and repairs to cooling, electrical, heating, and suspension systems
  • State Inspections: Conduct safety and emissions inspections, complete paperwork, and ensure vehicles meet specifications
  • Problem Diagnosis: Identify equipment issues and determine repairs, tools, and parts needed
  • Shop Safety: Maintain a clean work area, report hazards, and use proper protective equipment
  • Field Adjustments: Make routine adjustments, demonstrate repair techniques, and assist other mechanics with major repairs

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $56,607.00 (before taxes).

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Successful completion of the commonwealth's Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee program; or
  • Two years of journey level mechanic experience in the diagnosis and repair of automobiles, heavy trucks, or construction equipment, which includes one year of experience in the diagnosis and repair of diesel vehicles or equipment; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special Requirements:

  • This position requires possession of an active Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License.
  • This position requires possession of an active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N) within the probationary period.
  • This position requires an active Pennsylvania Class 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification on the first day of employment.

Additional Requirements:

  • This position requires possession of an active Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations at the time of application.
  • All employees must obtain an active certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in the operation of heavy trucks and loaders within the probationary period.
  • This position is subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
