What is same day surgery?

Same day surgery, also known as outpatient or ambulatory surgery, refers to surgical procedures where patients are admitted, operated on, and discharged all within the same day. These surgeries are typically less invasive, require shorter recovery times, and do not require an overnight hospital stay. Common examples include cataract removal, hernia repairs, and minor orthopedic procedures. Same day surgery allows patients to recover in the comfort of their own homes and generally leads to lower healthcare costs.

What are some common challenges faced by nurses working in Same Day Surgery, and how can they be addressed?

Nurses in Same Day Surgery often face the challenge of managing a fast-paced workflow, as they care for multiple patients who require pre-operative and post-operative care within a single day. This environment demands excellent time management, adaptability, and effective communication with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals. To address these challenges, nurses benefit from strong organizational skills, teamwork, and ongoing training in up-to-date surgical and recovery protocols. Maintaining clear communication with patients and their families is also crucial to ensure a safe and positive experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Same Day Surgery Nurse, and why are they important?
