Same Day Surgery RN

The Same Day Surgery RN uses critical thinking skills, professional judgment and leadership to anticipate, plan, direct and evaluate the care of the patients provided by a team of ancillary personnel. The Same Day Surgery Nurse is accountable for general nursing care to surgical inpatient and outpatient populations. Assesses, plans, evaluates, implements, and documents the nursing process of care delivery. Assumes responsibility and accountability for the application of the nursing process and delivery of patient care. Consistently performs according to nursing standards and is accountable in managing patient care and assisting others in the management of patient care.

Duties and responsibilities include:

  • Uses the nursing process, critical thinking skills, professional judgment, and the attributes of careful nursing to provide care for an assigned population of patients.
  • Plans, provides, supervises and documents professional nursing care utilizing the nursing process for patients in accordance with physician orders and established policies and procedures.
  • Communicates and collaborates with nurses, physicians, technicians and other members of the healthcare team to develop a plan of care to ensure optimal patient outcomes and continuity of care.
  • Charts observations and activities related to patient care in electronic health record.
  • Provides safe, effective, and compassionate nursing care for a patient population using critical thinking skills, advocacy abilities and ethical approaches.
  • Guides and directs assigned unlicensed assistive personnel in delivering interdisciplinary patient care.
  • Collects blood specimens by venipuncture or micro techniques for laboratory analysis necessary for patient treatment and diagnosis.
  • Demonstrates awareness of organizational values, mission and philosophy through interactions with physicians, patients and peers.
  • Demonstrates basic ability to apply the nursing process (assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation and documentation).
  • Completes unit orientation within stated time frame.
  • Functions independently within established protocols, policies and procedures.
  • Seeks appropriate resources in a timely fashion.
  • Demonstrates basic unit specific competencies.
  • Meets productivity and quality standards for unit; able to care for an average workload.
  • Demonstrates clear verbal and written communication skills.
  • Plans and demonstrates appropriate delegation of duties and follow-up.
  • Participates and documents client specific teaching and discharge planning.
  • Gives clear, concise report (shift, transfer, discharge etc.).
  • Provides clear, concise legible documentation.
  • Assumes responsibility for professional education and development.
  • Completes mandatory in-service requirements.
  • Completes at least 20 hours of continuing education in addition to mandatory requirements within the last year that is specific to daily clinical practice.
  • Verbalizes an understanding of the committee structure and function in the Department of Nursing and at the unit level.
  • Coordinates discharge planning by identifying discharge needs, implementing/revising and educates patient/family prior to discharge regarding the diagnosis, medication and discharge instructions.
  • Discusses patient progress, problems and needs with physician and multidisciplinary team members on a regular basis to ensure that goals for discharge are met.
  • Assures high levels of quality of care through compliance with regulatory standards, reference to current research related to patient care outcome and participation in the data collection and analysis process of ongoing quality monitoring.
  • Assesses signs and symptoms indicating physiologic and psychosocial changes in the patient's condition and reports changes to the physician.
  • Performs interventions according to identified priorities, plan of care, infection control and the hospital policies and patient care outcome standards.
  • Actively participates in Quality Assurance/Process Improvement initiatives to improve patient safety and outcomes, such as monitoring compliance of core measures, infection control practices, etc.
  • Uses supplies in a cost effective and efficient manners, and works with the management team to make unit supply level adjustments, additions and revisions.

Job Specifications

Required knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing required.
  • Current RN License in the State of Illinois required.
  • Current CPR certification required.
  • ACLS certification required.
  • Ability to quickly recognize changes in condition and needs of patients.
  • Knowledge of patients' growth and development needs.
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of accuracy in carrying out work duties.
