Each member of our team is accountable for the outstanding delivery of services to our user-agencies. The Laborer II will assist the Support Services Supervisor as a member of the team that performs support services functions for the City which includes setting up rooms and outdoor venues for meetings, receptions and other events.

What You Should Bring The ideal candidate should be able perform heavy physical labor safely and efficiently. The ability to work cooperatively with colleagues, customers, vendors and the public is an essential function of this position. You will also need to possess the stamina to move and/or haul items around the City safely and efficiently.

The Opportunity - Examples of Primary Job functions Assists the Laborer Supervisor as a member of the crew that performs maintenance functions; Operates a non-CDL stake-body truck or similar in making deliveries of supplies and equipment to designated locations; this includes move and/or remove furniture within different spaces throughout the city and assist in pickup/delivering items throughout city as needed, operate material handling equipment such as pallet jacks, carts, dollies, and at times forklifts and motorized pallet jacks. Assist with physical inventory, cycle counts and spot checks; Assists in setting up rooms for meetings, receptions and other events; Provide support for Citywide Meetings, & Special Events during both business and afterhours as needed; Assist with emergency weather response operations as needed.; Loads trucks with bagged and or bulk de-icing materials during snow operations. Respond, manage, and document and create customer service requests; Successfully communicate with customers as needed by using in-person, phone, email, etc. methods; Manage and oversee vendors as needed; Performs related work as required. Examples of Secondary Job functions Replenish janitorial materials, such as soap, toilet paper etc.

Cleans and maintains facilities & grounds by emptying garbage cans, cleaning up minor spills that occur, cleaning parking lots, gardens, interior common areas, and removing and securing surplus supplies and equipment; Change lights within facilities & Grounds clean & maintain water fountains Performs related work as required About the Department The Department of General Services mission is to provide exceptional management of the City's real estate, facilities and other support services for all our customers, internal and external. The Department of General Services staff strives to provide our customers with unmatched services by proactively managing the City's assets to support the delivery of services to the City of Alexandria, responding to service requests in a timely manner, listening to our customers, and ensuring that our customers are satisfied with the resolution. Minimum & Additional Requirements Completion of high school or vocational school courses; ability to perform heavy manual labor in all types of weather; some knowledge of construction or maintenance activities and the equipment and tools of the trade; and one year experience in any trade; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Preferred Qualifications Minimum four (4) years of experience in facilities, roadway, bridge or grounds maintenance is preferred. Experience operating tools, equipment and vehicles properly and safely are a must. Valid Driver's License issued by the aplicant state of residence.

Ability to use common hand tools, power tools, and small engine equipment; ability to follow oral instructions; ability to safely drive and park a 1-ton truck with trailer attached; ability to perform heavy manual labor daily. Must posses the ability to lift objects over 44 pound with or without accommodations; ability to stand for long periods of time; ability to pull, push, reach above shoulders, repeated bending, crawling and climbing; frequent walking indoors and outdoors; ability to perform work in adverse work conditions Notes This position requires the successful completion of pre-employment background checks including but not limited to drug testing, criminal background and medical screening- Fit for Duty. Outside of general business hours the Laborer II will be required to work evening and weekend hours on a rotational bases.
