Detroit Salt is a historic organization with a rich legacy spanning over 100 years, originating in 1906 as a salt producer for leather and food processing. Since 1997, Detroit Salt has supplied local and national customers with tons of rock salt and premium ice melter formulations. The fruit of this labor is apparent in the salt city 1,200 feet beneath the city of Detroit, spanning more than 1,500 acres and containing over 100 miles of underground roads. Job Summary:
Detroit Salt Company is seeking a Diesel Mechanic that will be responsible for maintaining, repairing, and troubleshooting heavy mining equipment, such as haul trucks, loaders, drills, and conveyors. Your expertise will ensure that our fleet and machinery are operating at peak performance, contributing to the smooth and safe extraction of salt. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys hands-on work, problem-solving, and thrives in an industrial setting.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Analyzes malfunctions and repairs, rebuilds and maintains power equipment, such as cranes, wheel loaders, haul trucks, conveyors, bulldozers, personnel transport vehicles, pumps, compressors and pneumatic tools.
  • Operate and inspects machines or equipment to diagnose defects, dismantles and reassembles equipment, using hoists and hand tools, examines parts for damage or excessive wear.
  • Weld broken parts and structural members.
  • Check and fill fluid levels, service lube points and performs routine preventative maintenance.

  • Inspect and perform daily routine housekeeping as necessary to ensure a clean and safe work area.
  • Complete assigned paperwork accurately and turn in work log at the end of each shift.
  • Work safely, responsibly and follow all safety policies, procedures, and regulations. Is alert to hazards and changing conditions on all mine property.

  • Trouble shoot and repair electrical and hydraulic systems in a timely and craftsmanship like manner.
  • Utilize technical drawing and testing equipment.
  • Obtain replacement parts, install and/or make repairs.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • High school diploma/ GED required.
  • 1-year CAT SIS Program experience preferred.
  • 2-4 years of experience working in an industrial shop or mining environment required.
  • 2-4 years heavy equipment mechanic experience required.
  • Dependable -- more reliable than spontaneous.
  • Must hold a Michigan mechanic certification (e.g. diesel engine, transmission, hydraulic, electrical systems, etc.)
  • Must be familiar with some but not limited to the following types of equipment, sub-systems, support equipment and related systems: cranes, loaders, haul trucks, conveyors, bulldozers, personnel transport vehicles, pumps, compressors and pneumatic tools.
  • Able to operate vehicles and equipment for testing and troubleshooting before and after performing maintenance activities
  • Capable of repairing equipment to OEM standards.
  • Must be able to diagnose system malfunctions, isolate causes, and correct deficiencies.
  • Must be able to dismantles and reassembles equipment.
  • Have a working knowledge of how to operate lifting devices, hand and pneumatic tools. Repair and replace components, engines, transmission, and sub-assemblies.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office and general computer programs.
  • Must have demonstrated problem-solving skills.
  • Must be able to speak, comprehend, and read English.

Physical requirement
  • Must be able to work underground for a minimum of 55 hours per week.
  • Must be able to work 6 days per week.
  • Must be able to work any shift.
  • Must be able to work safely in varying temperatures in production/warehouse workplace and outside year-round.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50+ pounds regularly.
  • Must comply with and wear all PPE.
