What is a salon internship?

Salon internships are temporary, hands-on training opportunities for students or recent graduates interested in pursuing a career in cosmetology, hair styling, or other beauty services. Interns work under the supervision of experienced professionals to learn practical skills, salon etiquette, and customer service. These internships help build a foundation of real-world experience, often serving as a stepping stone to full-time employment in the beauty industry.

What types of responsibilities and learning experiences can I expect as a salon intern?

As a salon intern, you can expect to assist with a variety of tasks such as shampooing clients, preparing workstations, sanitizing tools, and supporting stylists with color mixing or product application. Interns often observe seasoned professionals to learn cutting, coloring, and styling techniques, and may also help with front-desk duties like scheduling appointments or greeting clients. This hands-on experience offers valuable insight into salon operations while allowing you to build foundational skills and professional relationships essential for advancing your career in the beauty industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a salon intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Salon Intern, you generally need foundational knowledge of hair and beauty techniques, basic cosmetology training, and often enrollment in or completion of a cosmetology program. Familiarity with salon tools, sanitation procedures, and booking or point-of-sale systems is common. Strong communication, a willingness to learn, and teamwork help interns build client rapport and integrate smoothly with salon staff. These skills and qualities are vital for delivering excellent service, ensuring safety, and gaining valuable industry experience.

About Great Clips

Sourced by ZipRecruiter

Great Clips, Inc. was established in Minneapolis, Minnesota by founders David Rubenzer and Steve Lemmon in 1982, a time when most people received haircuts in one of three ways: in full-service hair salons, from barbershops or at home. As a stylist and businessman, David could see that the industry was changing. Customers were looking for a hair salon service that could fit their busy lifestyles and desire for value. To be part of that change – rather than find themselves competing with it – David and Steve developed the then-radical concept of a walk-in haircare salon with weekend and evening hours, offering customers a select list of services, and providing benefits for stylists. After the founders opened several successful hair salons, Ray Barton joined David and Steve as an owner in March 1983. With Ray's help and expertise in franchising, the trio set about growing the Great Clips hair salon brand. That success continues through today.
