The main difference between a Salon Assistant and a Hair Stylist is that the Salon Assistant supports salon operations and prepares clients, while the Hair Stylist performs hair cutting, coloring, and styling services. The Salon Assistant typically requires basic cosmetology training, whereas the Hair Stylist must be licensed and experienced in providing hair treatments. Both roles are essential in a salon environment, but they differ in responsibilities and qualifications.

How much do styling assistants get paid?

Styling assistants in salons typically earn an hourly wage ranging from $10 to $15, with some earning higher based on experience, location, and tips. Entry-level assistants often start at the lower end, while experienced assistants or those working in high-end salons may earn more, especially with tips and commissions.

What is the highest paid assistant job?

The highest paid assistant jobs are often executive assistants or personal assistants to high-level executives, with salaries reaching six figures in some cases. These roles typically require advanced organizational skills, experience, and sometimes specialized knowledge or certifications. Compensation varies based on industry, location, and level of responsibility.

Can I be a salon assistant without a license?

Salon assistants typically do not need a license to perform basic tasks such as cleaning, organizing, and assisting stylists. However, if the role involves performing chemical treatments or cutting hair, a cosmetology license is usually required by state or local regulations. Requirements vary depending on the specific duties and location.

What are the typical responsibilities of a Salon Assistant during a busy workday?

Salon Assistants play a vital role in supporting stylists and ensuring smooth salon operations. On a busy day, you can expect to greet clients, wash and condition hair, restock supplies, sanitize workstations, and assist with appointment scheduling. You'll also help prepare color treatments, handle laundry, and occasionally provide refreshments to clients. This hands-on experience not only builds your technical skills but also helps you learn about salon workflows and customer service, paving the way for future growth in the beauty industry.

What are Salon Assistants?

Salon Assistants are entry-level professionals who provide support to hairstylists, colorists, and other salon staff. Their responsibilities typically include shampooing clients, sweeping floors, sanitizing tools and workstations, booking appointments, and assisting with customer service. This role helps salons run smoothly and offers valuable hands-on experience for those interested in pursuing a career in the beauty industry. Many Salon Assistants use this position as a stepping stone to become licensed cosmetologists or stylists.

What Does a Salon Assistant Do?

A salon assistant, or hair stylist assistant, helps a lead stylist with their daily tasks. Responsibilities and duties may include gathering supplies, mixing colors, shampooing hair, sterilizing tools, and general cleaning. Some assistants also greet clients and schedule appointments. You can work as a salon assistant to gain experience while going through cosmetology school, although some states require you to pass a licensing exam before becoming a salon assistant.

What are the duties of a salon assistant?

A salon assistant supports hairstylists and salon staff by performing tasks such as cleaning and sanitizing workstations, preparing clients for services, shampooing hair, and assisting with product organization. They may also help with reception duties, scheduling appointments, and maintaining a clean, organized environment to ensure smooth salon operations.

About Great Clips

Sourced by ZipRecruiter

Great Clips, Inc. was established in Minneapolis, Minnesota by founders David Rubenzer and Steve Lemmon in 1982, a time when most people received haircuts in one of three ways: in full-service hair salons, from barbershops or at home. As a stylist and businessman, David could see that the industry was changing. Customers were looking for a hair salon service that could fit their busy lifestyles and desire for value. To be part of that change – rather than find themselves competing with it – David and Steve developed the then-radical concept of a walk-in haircare salon with weekend and evening hours, offering customers a select list of services, and providing benefits for stylists. After the founders opened several successful hair salons, Ray Barton joined David and Steve as an owner in March 1983. With Ray's help and expertise in franchising, the trio set about growing the Great Clips hair salon brand. That success continues through today.
