What is a sales manager?

Sales Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing a company's sales teams and strategies. They set sales goals, analyze data, develop training programs, and lead their teams to achieve revenue targets. Sales Managers also build relationships with clients, resolve customer complaints, and coordinate with other departments to ensure customer satisfaction. Their role is crucial in driving business growth and ensuring the company's products or services reach the right markets.

What do sales managers do?

Sales managers lead, supervise, and mentor a team of salespeople. They delegate job duties to their staff and set clear expectations and goals. The primary responsibilities of a sales manager include creating a sales plan, setting quotas for salespeople, assigning territories, and training new salespeople. They also prepare regular reports on sales figures for upper management.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a sales manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Sales Manager, you need strong sales expertise, leadership abilities, and a solid understanding of sales strategies, typically supported by a bachelor’s degree in business or a related field. Familiarity with CRM software like Salesforce, sales analytics tools, and relevant sales certifications are commonly required. Exceptional communication, motivational, and problem-solving skills help Sales Managers build cohesive teams and drive results. These skills are essential for achieving sales targets, fostering team performance, and maintaining client relationships in a competitive marketplace.

What are some common challenges sales managers face when leading a team, and how can they overcome them?

Sales Managers often encounter challenges such as motivating a diverse team, meeting ambitious targets, and adapting to rapidly changing market conditions. Successfully addressing these issues requires strong communication skills, the ability to coach and mentor team members, and a data-driven approach to track progress. Building a collaborative environment and providing regular feedback helps ensure everyone stays aligned and focused on shared goals. Leveraging technology and ongoing training can also support the team in adapting to new sales strategies and customer needs.

Job description

About Intouch Insight

Intouch Insight has been helping multi-location brands across North America turn customer feedback and operational data into action since 1992. We've built our reputation on our range of customer experience measurement services and software products, which are trusted by hundreds of North America's most-loved brands, including well-known names in restaurants, retail, grocery and convenience.

The Role

We're looking for a Sales Manager to lead and energize a small sales team. This is a player-coach role: part of your week will be spent coaching, motivating, and removing roadblocks for your reps, and part of it may be spent directly securing and managing a book of house accounts.

We are a lean, tight-knit team where everyone's contribution is visible and you will thrive here if you are hands-on by nature, energized by daily sales activity, and good at bringing out the best in a small, nimble team. We sell across the mid-market and enterprise levels, leveraging both inbound and outbound strategies. If you like being close to the action - coaching reps one day, jumping on a client call the next - this is your kind of place.

What You'll Do

  • Lead, coach, and motivate a small team of sales reps - running regular 1:1s, pipeline reviews, and call-coaching to build skill and energy and to ensure continuous improvement of key sales metrics (eg close rates).
  • Set the tone for the team day to day: hands-on, energetic, and engaged rather than purely strategic or hierarchical.
  • Take responsibility for the delivery of the sales department's quota.
  • Professionally respond to RFI's and RFP's as required to secure new business
  • Take responsibility for the management of house accounts as required.
  • Own team-level pipeline health and forecasting and be responsible for the accurate and timely reporting of sales team KPI's to leadership.
  • Help recruit, onboard, and ramp-up new sales reps as the team grows.
  • Work closely with marketing, customer success, and product teams to ensure a smooth client hand-off and ensure successful ongoing execution.
  • Identify and act on opportunities to improve the sales process, tools, and messaging.
  • Jump in on deals directly when needed - helping to close, unblocking a stuck opportunity, or covering for a rep.
  • Leverage technology to drive the efficiency and effectiveness of our sales process, utilizing the latest in AI tooling to improve our team's performance.

What We're Looking For

  • 3-6+ years of B2B sales experience, with some team leadership or mentorship experience.
  • A genuine hands-on style - you'd rather be in the field, on calls, and writing RFP responses than buried in strategy decks.
  • Experience motivating and developing a remote team; you know how to keep energy and accountability high without heavy process.
  • Comfortable carrying some individual sales responsibility yourself, alongside managing others.
  • Ability to travel if/as required to support sales team, prospects and clients.
  • Experience in market research, customer experience measurement, SaaS, or a related B2B services space is an asset.
  • Strength in utilizing technologies including Microsoft product suite, CRM tools, and emerging AI tools.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills.
  • Excellent communication skills and a natural relationship-builder, both with clients and with your team.
  • The ability to work one day of the week in the Kanata Office would be an asset.

Compensation

  • Base salary of 120k-130k, plus a variable compensation package tied to performance.

Why Intouch Insight

  • An entrepreneurial and collaborative environment where your impact is visible and immediate.
  • The chance to shape how a sales team operates, rather than inheriting a rigid playbook.
  • Work with recognizable, established brands across North America.
