Sales Engineer Project Manager information

What is a sales engineer project manager?

A Sales Engineer Project Manager is a professional who combines technical expertise with project management and sales skills. They are responsible for overseeing the implementation of complex technical solutions for clients, often acting as the main point of contact between the sales team, engineering team, and the customer. Their role involves understanding customer requirements, proposing suitable products or solutions, coordinating project timelines, and ensuring successful delivery. Sales Engineer Project Managers must possess strong communication and organizational skills to bridge the gap between technical teams and clients, ensuring both customer satisfaction and project profitability.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a sales engineer project manager?

To thrive as a Sales Engineer Project Manager, you need a blend of technical engineering knowledge, project management expertise, and a background in sales, often supported by a relevant degree and certifications like PMP. Familiarity with CRM software, project management tools (such as MS Project or Asana), and CAD systems is crucial for managing client requirements and project workflows. Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and negotiation skills help build client relationships and lead cross-functional teams. These skills ensure successful project delivery, client satisfaction, and the ability to bridge technical and commercial objectives.

How do sales engineer project managers typically balance technical problem-solving with project management responsibilities?

Sales Engineer Project Managers often juggle technical solution design and client consultations alongside overseeing project timelines, budgets, and team coordination. Balancing these tasks requires strong prioritization and communication skills, as you'll frequently switch between addressing client technical concerns and ensuring projects stay on track. Most organizations support this by having collaborative teams where project managers work closely with engineers, sales staff, and clients to align goals and expectations. This dynamic environment offers exposure to both technical challenges and leadership opportunities, which can accelerate career growth for those who thrive in multitasking roles.

How much is the salary of a sales engineer project manager?

The salary of a sales engineer project manager typically ranges from $80,000 to $130,000 annually, depending on experience, industry, and location. They often require technical knowledge, sales skills, and project management certifications such as PMP or CSPE.

Civil Engineer Project Manager

Our client is a well-established civil engineering and land-development firm with approximately 60 employees serving private-sector clients throughout the Nashville market. The firm provides planning and civil engineering services for residential subdivisions, commercial developments, educational facilities, parks, entertainment venues, and other high-profile developments. The organization has built a stable, family-oriented culture centered on professional development, internal growth, collaboration, and maintaining a manageable work-life balance. The company is growing thoughtfully and offers significant flexibility, including a typical 40โ€“45-hour workweek and the potential for a four-and-a-half-day schedule after eligibility is earned. This is a fully onsite position in Nashville, TN, with relocation considered for the right candidate.

About the Role

The Civil Engineering Project Manager will oversee multiple private-sector land and site-development projects from initial design through completion while combining technical engineering expertise, project management, client relationship management, and team leadership. The PM will generally maintain ownership of projects throughout their entire lifecycle and will manage approximately four to seven active projects at a time, with an average project duration of six to eight months.

Responsibilities
  • Manage civil engineering and land-development projects from initial design through completion.
  • Lead projects through entitlement, site design, permitting, construction administration, and closeout.
  • Manage approximately 4โ€“7 active projects simultaneously, prioritizing deadlines and project needs.
  • Oversee project schedules, budgets, deliverables, deadlines, and overall quality.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for private-sector clients.
  • Develop and maintain strong, long-term client relationships.
  • Coordinate with municipalities, consultants, contractors, developers, and other stakeholders.
  • Lead and coordinate a team of approximately six engineers and design professionals.
  • Review engineering plans for accuracy, quality, constructability, and compliance with project requirements.
  • Provide technical oversight and quality control throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Perform limited handsโ€‘on engineering and design work as needed, with approximately 20โ€“30% of the role involving plan review or design assistance.
  • Address grading, drainage, stormwater, utility coordination, permitting, and other landโ€‘development challenges.
  • Identify potential issues early and develop solutions before they negatively impact schedules, budgets, or quality.
  • Mentor and develop younger engineers and design professionals.
  • Maintain project documentation and utilize projectโ€‘management systems to monitor project performance.
  • Support client retention and existingโ€‘account growth, with opportunities to participate in business development based on individual strengths and interests.
Qualifications
  • Approximately 8+ years of civil engineering experience, with a target range of 7โ€“15+ years of relevant experience.
  • Strong experience in private-sector land and site development is required.
  • Proven civil engineering project-management experience.
  • Experience managing multiple private-sector clients and active projects.
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Tennessee PE license or the ability to obtain Tennessee licensure through reciprocity.
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Civil Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
Required Skills
  • Strong AutoCAD Civil 3D proficiency.
  • Experience with entitlement, grading, drainage/stormwater, utility coordination, permitting, construction administration, plan review, and quality control.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage project schedules, budgets, deadlines, and deliverables.
  • Experience leading, mentoring, or directing engineers and design professionals.
  • Strong client communication and relationshipโ€‘management skills.
  • Ability to combine technical engineering work with project management and team leadership.
  • Experience with projectโ€‘management software; Deltek Ajera is preferred.
Preferred Skills
  • Nashville-area municipal experience is a plus.
  • Established private-sector client relationships and business-development instincts are a plus.
  • Experience serving as a market or team lead is a plus.
