Sales Development Intern information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Sales Development Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Sales Development Intern, you need strong communication skills, a basic understanding of sales principles, and the ability to quickly learn about products or services, typically supported by ongoing education or a relevant degree. Familiarity with Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems like Salesforce and proficiency in using email outreach platforms are often expected. Proactivity, resilience, and a collaborative attitude help interns excel when reaching out to prospects and working with sales teams. These skills are crucial for generating leads, building relationships, and supporting overall sales growth within the organization.

What are some common challenges faced by Sales Development Interns, and how can they overcome them?

Sales Development Interns often face challenges such as managing rejection, quickly learning product details, and efficiently qualifying leads. Navigating these obstacles requires resilience, a willingness to ask questions, and proactive communication with mentors or team members. Embracing feedback, utilizing available sales tools, and participating in regular training sessions can help interns build confidence and develop effective sales techniques.

What does a Sales Development Intern do?

A Sales Development Intern supports the sales team by identifying and qualifying potential leads, conducting research on prospective clients, and assisting with outreach efforts such as phone calls and emails. They often help schedule meetings between qualified leads and sales representatives and maintain records in customer relationship management (CRM) systems. This role provides valuable hands-on experience in the sales process and is typically geared toward students or recent graduates looking to start a career in sales.

Is 20 an hour good for an internship?

For a Sales Development Intern, $20 an hour is generally considered above average for internships, which often pay between minimum wage and $15 per hour. The pay can vary based on location, company size, and industry standards, but $20 per hour typically reflects a competitive rate for entry-level sales roles. Additionally, internships may include other benefits such as training and networking opportunities.

We're looking for driven, curious, and analytical students to join the Customer Development team as Fall 2026 Interns.

Customer Development (CD) is Unilever's sales organization. This team works closely with major retail partners to drive category growth, execute business strategies, and bring shopper-focused solutions to life.

As a Customer Development Intern, you'll gain hands-on experience supporting real business initiatives while working alongside experienced leaders and cross-functional teams. You'll have exposure to data analysis, customer strategy, category planning, and business development projects that directly impact the business.

Internship opportunities may sit within:

This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to build experience in sales, strategy, analytics, or consumer packaged goods.

You're proactive, detail-oriented, and comfortable balancing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. You're naturally curious and enjoy turning insights into recommendations and action plans.

You're also someone who likes being part of a team, takes initiative, and isn't afraid to ask questions or bring forward new ideas.

Most importantly, you're excited to learn, grow, and contribute in a meaningful way.

Your Responsibilities

Depending on your team assignment, responsibilities may include:

  • Accessing, managing, and analyzing customer and sales data
  • Supporting the development of customer and category growth strategies
  • Translating insights into actionable business recommendations
  • Assisting with reporting, presentations, and business reviews
  • Supporting retailer and promotional planning initiatives
  • Collaborating with internal teams including Sales, Brand, and Category teams
  • Supporting customer-facing initiatives and Joint Business Planning activities
  • Monitoring business performance metrics and identifying opportunities for growth
  • Helping ensure projects, timelines, and deliverables are executed effectively
  • Presenting internship project findings and recommendations to business leaders at the end of the program

Your Experience

In addition to everything outlined in The Perfect Person for the Role, the ideal candidate will have:

  • Currently enrolled in 3rd or 4th year of a Bachelor's degree program

  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including:
    • VLOOKUP
    • Pivot Tables
    • SUMIF
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Availability to work Monday-Friday, 9:00 AM-5:00 PM EST with no academic conflicts
  • Eligibility to work full-time in Canada for the duration of the internship
  • Ability to work in a hybrid environment with a minimum of 2 in-office days per week
