What is a sais?

Sais are traditional Okinawan martial arts weapons that resemble short, three-pronged tridents. Historically, they were used for self-defense and are now commonly practiced in various martial arts, such as Karate and Kobudo. Practitioners use sais to block, trap, and strike, often demonstrating both forms (kata) and sparring techniques. Mastery of the sai requires skill, coordination, and discipline.

What types of clients or industries do sais professionals typically work with, and how does this impact their daily responsibilities?

Sais professionals often collaborate with a diverse range of clients, including those in government, education, healthcare, and private industry. This diversity means that daily tasks can range from data analysis and reporting to strategic consulting and stakeholder engagement, depending on the client's needs. The variety of industries not only makes the work dynamic but also requires adaptability and strong communication skills, as Sais professionals must tailor their approach to each client's unique challenges and objectives. This client-focused structure provides valuable exposure to different business environments and can accelerate professional growth.

Job description

Jacob’s Ladder, a non-profit, SAIS-Cognia accredited Neurodevelopmental School and Therapy Center, is seeking a compassionate, missionally aligned Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to join the team and help steward the health and safety of our school community.

Jacob’s Ladder School Nurse:
The School Nurse will serve as a central support for student and staff wellness, overseeing the management of daily medical needs, health-related documentation, and campus health and wellness protocols. This is a full-time position; however, part-time hours may be available, dependent upon organizational and client needs. Additionally, the School Nurse may directly work with medically and physiologically complex clients as a Neurodevelopmental Provider, delivering intensive care and individualized programming through the Interpersonal Whole Brain Model of Care® (IWBMC™).

In this role, the School Nurse provides compassionate and comprehensive care to clients throughout the day, including administering medications, supporting clients with medical needs and equipment (i.e., G-tube feedings), monitoring medical protocols and practices for clients in partnership with the clinical leadership team, responding to medical situations, including but not limited to seizures and allergic reactions, and supporting general wellness needs for clients and staff. The nurse is responsible for maintaining and tracking all health records as outlined in the Jacob’s Ladder Group’s Clinical Policy and Procedural Manual for clients, ensuring that documentation is current, accurate, and well-organized.

This role may also involve monitoring trends in health-related data, such as illness-related absences or flu and COVID spikes, and sharing these insights with the administrative team to guide responsive decision-making and policy updates, as well as sharing wellness strategies with clients’ families and staff. The nurse also serves as a trusted advisor to clinical leadership on health-related procedures, legal compliance, and best practices for safety and wellness.

Communication with clinical leadership is central to this role, as the nurse keeps the appropriate team members informed to ensure leadership team members can then communicate accordingly with families.

The nurse maintains records of CPR and First Aid training for all staff. This role is an integral part of the school community, supporting a safe, healthy, and nurturing environment for all.
