Job description

Position Description
Performs complex safety and health program work. Work involves implementing safety policies and procedures, supporting the safety training and education of staff, inspecting work areas and activities for hazards, and investigating accidents. Works under direct supervision with qualified latitude for initiative and independent judgment.
Major/Essential Functions
  • Assist and advise Departmental faculty and staff on safety issues and on ways to improve safety conditions.
  • Supervise and coordinate safety efforts within teaching and research labs. Check to determine that all research and teaching labs follow appropriate safety protocols.
  • Be physically present at all scheduled Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) inspections. Work with EH&S during Department safety inspections.
  • Aid EH&S during Departmental environmental clean up.
  • Assist EH&S during waste collection and pick up.
  • Regularly walk through research and teaching labs to promote safe conditions and ensure that the labs are following national, state, and university regulations.
  • Communicate to the Department any changes in national, state, and university regulations that are pertinent with regard to safety and safety management. Partner with all stakeholders in the safety education and training of the personnel as appropriate.
  • Serve as a member of the Department Safety Committee.
  • Actively engage in continual professional development on safety matters.

Required Qualifications
Graduation from high school with four years of work experience or an associate degree in a STEM field. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence and perform basic math. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and communicate ideas clearly and concisely.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Comprehensive knowledge of OSHA (Hazard Communication, Laboratory Safety Standard), EPA (RCRA hazardous waste management), and NFPA codes related to chemical storage and fire safety.
  • Chemical Hygiene: Deep understanding/knowledge of the Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP) and the specific hazards associated with various chemical classes (pyrophoric, peroxidizable, strong oxidizers, etc.).
  • Knowledge of laboratory ventilation systems, specifically the operation and certification standards for chemical fume hoods and biosafety cabinets.
  • Knowledge of both systematic and common chemical nomenclature/terminology and know or develop familiarity with common chemistry and biochemistry laboratory procedures.
  • Knowledge with protocol for chemical spills, medical emergencies, and the proper use of emergency equipment (eyewashes, safety showers, and fire suppressants).
  • Ability to conduct thorough Job Hazard Analyses (JHA) and provide actionable recommendations for mitigating risks in experimental procedures.
  • Skill in drafting Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), safety manuals, and incident reports that are clear and accessible to both faculty and students.
  • Knowledge in developing and delivering engaging safety training modules for various audiences, from undergraduate students to senior researchers.
  • Skill in performing detailed laboratory audits and utilizing tracking software to manage corrective actions and compliance data.
  • Ability to enforce safety policies firmly but diplomatically, especially when addressing non-compliance with faculty or research staff.
  • The ability to evaluate complex experimental setups and identify potential "near-miss" scenarios before they result in accidents.
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) for extended periods, lift hazardous waste containers (typically up to 30-50 lbs), and respond quickly to various locations within the department.
  • Ability to serve as a liaison between the department and the university's central Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) office
