Safety Data Sheets Creator information

What is a Safety Data Sheets creator?

Safety Data Sheets Creators are professionals responsible for developing, compiling, and maintaining Safety Data Sheets (SDS) that provide detailed information about the hazards, handling, storage, and emergency measures related to chemicals and substances. They ensure that these documents comply with regulatory standards such as OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard or the Globally Harmonized System (GHS). Their work helps employers and workers safely use and manage hazardous materials in the workplace, reducing risks and supporting legal compliance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Safety Data Sheets creator?

A Safety Data Sheets Creator must have a solid understanding of chemical safety regulations, hazard communication standards (such as OSHA or GHS), and strong attention to detail, often supported by a background in chemistry or environmental science. Familiarity with SDS authoring software and regulatory databases, as well as certifications like Certified SDS Author (if available), are typically required. Excellent written communication, analytical thinking, and organizational skills help ensure accuracy and clarity in documentation. These competencies are crucial to guarantee compliance, protect workplace safety, and provide clear guidance on hazardous materials.

What are some common challenges faced by Safety Data Sheets creators when gathering accurate chemical information?

Safety Data Sheets Creators often encounter challenges in obtaining comprehensive and up-to-date data on chemical substances, especially when working with proprietary formulations or new products. They must collaborate closely with chemists, suppliers, and regulatory affairs teams to verify ingredient details, hazard classifications, and compliance with global regulations. Ensuring accuracy is critical, as errors can lead to compliance issues or safety risks, making attention to detail and clear communication essential skills in this role.

Job description

A Place Where People Matter.

Start your career journey with Univar Solutions! Here you can make an impact on the world around you and accelerate your career in areas that energize and excite you.

The Product Data Specialist plays a critical role in building and maintaining a high-quality product data foundation that powers Univar Solutions' Product Intelligence capabilities for the Ingredients + Specialties (I+S) division. This role is responsible for gathering product documentation and data both from internal repositories and directly from suppliers, loading materials into the Product Information Management (PIM) system, and validating that data is accurate, complete, and properly structured after processing.

The Product Data Specialist ensures that all product documentation, including Safety Data Sheets, Technical Data Sheets, and other relevant materials, remains current and correct, proactively maintaining data freshness even where documentation does not carry a formal expiration date. This role also supports internal product data collection efforts and champions product data governance across the organization.

The ideal candidate is detail-oriented and collaborative, with a solid foundation in chemistry or chemical engineering and a genuine competency and curiosity about how chemicals are used across industries and end-use applications. They are comfortable working directly with external suppliers and internal stakeholders and are motivated by the quality and integrity of the data they manage.

What youll do:

  • Gather product data and documentation from external suppliers, managing outreach, follow-up, and relationship coordination to ensure timely and complete receipt of materials
  • Load product documents and data into the Product Information Management (PIM) system accurately and in accordance with established processes and standards
  • Validate product data after it is scrubbed and embedded in schema to ensure accuracy and readiness for use by the Product Intelligence tool
  • Maintain product documentation to ensure ongoing freshness and correctness, proactively identifying and refreshing outdated content even in the absence of a formal expiration date
  • Support product data governance initiatives, establishing and enforcing data standards, policies, and best practices across the product data lifecycle
  • Drive the collection of internal product data and documentation from cross-functional stakeholders
  • Validate data quality within the Product Intelligence tool, identifying gaps or inaccuracies and coordinating resolution
  • Support the rollout and adoption of the Product Intelligence tool as it expands across regions, including training delivery and user onboarding
  • Support product intelligence tool training for new hires across the I+S organization, ensuring consistent understanding how product data is available in the platform

What youll need:

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related scientific discipline
  • 1-3 years of experience in a chemical field or industry
  • Solid understanding of chemistry and chemical properties; knowledge of chemicals is essential for success in this position
  • Familiarity with how chemicals are used across industrial processes, end-use applications, and customer segments
  • Strong attention to detail with a commitment to data accuracy and completeness
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with suppliers and internal stakeholders
  • Experience with Product Information Management (PIM) systems or similar documentation management platforms preferred.
  • Familiarity with Safety Data Sheets (SDS), Technical Data Sheets (TDS), and other regulatory and non-regulatory chemical product documentation formats preferred.
  • Experience in data entry, data validation, or data quality roles preferred.
  • Exposure to chemical distribution, specialty chemicals, or related industries preferred.
  • Experience delivering training content for end users preferred.

Where youll work:

  • Hybrid opportunity for candidates based in Houston, TX or Dublin, OH.
