Job description

The Role
At Koto, writing isn't a finishing touch - it's foundational. Words help shape our thinking, sharpen our strategy, and unlock the kinds of ideas brands are built on.
We're looking for a Senior Copywriter who is equal parts strategist and writer. This isn't a traditional copywriting role focused solely on execution. It's an opportunity to help define brands through language - creating narratives, verbal identities, messaging systems, brand platforms, campaigns, naming territories, and everything in between.
You'll work closely with strategists, designers, creative directors, and clients to transform complex ideas into clear, compelling stories. You know how to move between big-picture thinking and meticulous craft, turning strategy into language that resonates. Equal parts thinker and maker, you'll help ambitious brands find their voice, articulate their value, and connect with audiences in meaningful ways.
Your Responsibilities
You develop brand narratives and verbal identities.
You create the language systems that bring brands to life. From messaging frameworks and verbal identities to brand platforms, campaign concepts, and naming, you know how to build language that is strategically grounded and creatively memorable.
You turn strategy into compelling stories.
You work closely with strategists, designers, and creative directors to translate complex thinking into clear, persuasive, and emotionally resonant communication. You know how to distill complexity into language that people actually care about.
You are an exceptional writer.
You bring rigor, originality, and craft to every word. You write across a wide range of formats - from manifestos and messaging frameworks to websites, campaigns, thought leadership, presentations, and brand guidelines.
You lead verbal workstreams.
As a senior member of the team, you're comfortable owning verbal development across projects. You can present recommendations to clients, facilitate conversations around language and tone of voice, and help teams arrive at stronger creative solutions.
You thrive in ambiguity.
You enjoy starting with a blank page. You explore multiple territories, challenge assumptions, uncover unexpected opportunities, and use language as a tool for discovery as much as expression.
You contribute to creative thinking beyond writing.
You believe great ideas don't belong to one discipline. You actively contribute to broader creative development, partnering closely with strategists and designers to shape concepts from the earliest stages of a project.
You navigate complexity with curiosity.
Whether you're working with an AI platform, an enterprise software company, a startup founder, or a global consumer brand, you can quickly understand complex subject matter and transform it into language that feels human, engaging, and memorable.
You collaborate generously.
You work independently but know when to pull others in. You build strong relationships across disciplines, welcome feedback, and understand that the best work emerges through collaboration.
You communicate with confidence.
You present clearly and persuasively, both internally and with clients. You know how to explain your thinking, guide discussions, and help others see the value of strong verbal strategy.
You stay organized and adaptable.
You manage multiple projects effectively, maintain momentum, and consistently deliver high-quality work in a fast-moving environment.
You use modern tools.
You're comfortable working in Figma/FigJam, Pitch, Notion, and AI-powered creative tools as part of your process.
Who You Are
  • An exceptional writer with significant experience developing brand narratives, messaging systems, verbal identities, and creative campaigns.
  • Equal parts strategist and writer, capable of moving seamlessly between strategic thinking and creative execution.
  • Experienced writer across a range of formats, audiences, and channels.
  • Comfortable presenting work directly to clients and leading discussions around language, messaging, and storytelling.
  • Curious, collaborative, and creatively ambitious.
  • Experienced working within a branding, advertising, design, or creative agency environment.
  • Experienced in using language as a tool for both strategic problem-solving and creative expression.
  • Experience developing narratives, messaging systems, thought leadership, and verbal identities for technology, AI, SaaS, enterprise, or B2B brands is highly valued.
Our Responsibilities
  1. We will ensure you have meaningful and regular access to your manager to support your personal development and career trajectory.
  2. We will actively reward performance with promotions, pay increases, and a discretionary annual bonus of up to 10% of salary to all employees.
  3. We ensure Koto is an equal environment for all its employees.
  4. We will support you in taking family leave and offer significant paid maternity and paternity.
  5. We will actively encourage you to take 25 days of vacation annually, in addition to US bank holidays (on average, seven), and a studio closure over the December Holidays.
  6. We will contribute an additional 4% to anyone who contributes to our 401(k) plan.
  7. We offer a monthly 'employee wellness' benefits package via Juno, valued at $100 per month.
  8. We offer YCN access and fund relevant training opportunities for any employee looking to develop themselves and their career.
  9. We reward five years of service with $5,000 and five days of vacation. We reward ten years of service with $10,000 and four weeks' vacation.
  10. We will provide you with the opportunity to work from any of our five Koto studios globally for a set time period, subject to appropriate planning and application.
Our Culture
  • At Koto, we encourage our team to be 'rationally optimistic' about the potential of our work, our clients, their businesses, and the power of brand.
  • We pursue the best briefs, want to inspire meaningful work, and, for those interested, provide an opportunity to make the work of their lives. We are actively cultivating leadership, culture, and spaces to encourage this.
  • We work in person, with an optional WFH day on Friday and an additional two weeks of remote work per year. We believe this produces the best work, mentoring opportunities, collective learning, and culture.
  • We encourage autonomy in each member of our team, allowing them to manage their own time, hours, and personal commitments appropriately to complete work.
