What is a Rust software developer?

A Rust Software Developer is a programmer who specializes in using the Rust programming language to build software applications. Rust is known for its focus on safety, speed, and concurrency, making it popular for systems programming, web services, and performance-critical tasks. Rust Software Developers may work on a variety of projects, from operating systems and embedded devices to backend web servers and command-line tools. Their responsibilities include writing, testing, and maintaining code, as well as collaborating with other developers to design robust and efficient systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Rust software developer?

To thrive as a Rust Software Developer, you need a solid background in systems programming, memory management, and proficiency in Rust, often supported by a degree in computer science or related experience. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, build tools such as Cargo, and experience with cross-platform development are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set outstanding candidates apart. These abilities are essential for building safe, efficient, and reliable software in demanding technical environments.

What are some common challenges faced by Rust software developers when working on large-scale projects?

Rust Software Developers often encounter challenges related to managing complex codebases, especially as projects scale. The language's strict ownership and borrowing rules, while beneficial for safety and concurrency, can make refactoring and integrating with legacy systems more time-consuming. Additionally, since Rust is still a relatively new language, developers may face limited library support or community resources for certain specialized tasks. Collaborating closely with teammates and leveraging thorough documentation helps to streamline workflows and overcome these hurdles.

Job description

Location: Reston, VA Security Clearance: TOP SECRET Software Engineer — Simulation, Optimization & Decision Support
Join a team building mission-critical software that turns complex technical concepts into tools decision-makers actually rely on. You’ll work across the full stack — from backend services to the interfaces that make sophisticated simulations and optimization models usable — and across the full lifecycle, from early prototyping through deployment.
We’re a small, collaborative group where engineers own real problems end to end. If you like working close to the research, translating hard technical ideas into clean, maintainable software, and seeing your work go from whiteboard to operational use, this role is built for you. What You’ll Do • Build and scale full-stack applications supporting simulation, optimization, and decision-support tools • Design backend services and APIs (Java, Rust, or similar) • Build responsive, intuitive front-end applications (React, TypeScript) • Partner directly with researchers and end users to shape requirements and translate technical concepts into working software • Contribute at every stage — prototyping, implementation, demos, and deployment Required Qualifications • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Applied Math, or related field • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience • Strong experience with React, TypeScript, and modern front-end tooling • Experience building backend services/APIs in Java, Rust, or similar languages • A track record of writing readable, maintainable, well-engineered code in a collaborative setting • Comfort working directly with researchers, engineers, and end users to turn ideas into usable software • Exposure to full-stack web development in any modern framework • U.S. citizenship required; must hold an active Top Secret clearance Nice to Have • Active TS/SCI clearance • Experience with performance-sensitive, algorithmic, or parallel/concurrent software • Background in defense, national security, or other mission-driven environments • 3D, geospatial, or high-performance visualization experience (WebGL, OpenGL) • Experience with distributed systems, databases, or messaging/async processing • Familiarity with AI/ML-enabled software (LLMs, computer vision, model integration) • Experience with cloud/containerized deployment (AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD) Email Your Resume Give Us A Call 1-888-243-EWSG (3974) Give Us A Call 1-301-365-3291 Send A Fax 1-301-658-7540 Wallach Search Group – Bethesda, MD – WallachSearch.com
