What is a Rust software developer?

A Rust Software Developer is a programmer who specializes in using the Rust programming language to build software applications. Rust is known for its focus on safety, speed, and concurrency, making it popular for systems programming, web services, and performance-critical tasks. Rust Software Developers may work on a variety of projects, from operating systems and embedded devices to backend web servers and command-line tools. Their responsibilities include writing, testing, and maintaining code, as well as collaborating with other developers to design robust and efficient systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Rust software developer?

To thrive as a Rust Software Developer, you need a solid background in systems programming, memory management, and proficiency in Rust, often supported by a degree in computer science or related experience. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, build tools such as Cargo, and experience with cross-platform development are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set outstanding candidates apart. These abilities are essential for building safe, efficient, and reliable software in demanding technical environments.

What are some common challenges faced by Rust software developers when working on large-scale projects?

Rust Software Developers often encounter challenges related to managing complex codebases, especially as projects scale. The language's strict ownership and borrowing rules, while beneficial for safety and concurrency, can make refactoring and integrating with legacy systems more time-consuming. Additionally, since Rust is still a relatively new language, developers may face limited library support or community resources for certain specialized tasks. Collaborating closely with teammates and leveraging thorough documentation helps to streamline workflows and overcome these hurdles.

What is the difference between Rust Software vs C++ Developer?

Search & Comparison IntentUnderstanding Rust's role vs C++ in development

Rust Software developers focus on safe, concurrent programming using Rust, often in modern systems and web assembly projects. C++ Developers work primarily with performance-critical applications across various industries. While both roles require programming expertise, Rust emphasizes safety and modern syntax, whereas C++ is known for its performance and legacy codebases.

We design, develop, and deploy technologies that change our world, fund start-ups across industries, and partner with leading global research organizations and universities to solve problems.

Jump Trading has a global team of technologists who architect, build and maintain our world‑class trading platform. From optimizing our core trading engine to building custom hardware, we leverage software & hardware engineering, data science and research, to deliver the infrastructure and tools that drive our trading and business needs. This role is in the Realtime Apps team where they build world class trading tools to empower trading teams to visualise and trade in markets all around the world.

What You'll Do

In this role, you will build the next generation of high‑performance, data‑dense GUI applications that deliver real‑time market data to traders. These applications are the primary interface between users and our trading systems, with a strong focus on tick‑to‑screen latency, performance, and visual clarity.

You will focus on low‑level rendering, graphics pipelines, and efficient data delivery to the browser, leveraging modern web technologies to push the limits of what is possible in real‑time GUIs. As a senior engineer, you will help shape technical direction, mentor teammates, and establish best practices for building world‑class GUI systems.

Skills You'll Need
  • 5+ years of experience building high‑performance GUI applications
  • Strong experience with React and modern web application architecture
  • Deep understanding of low‑level rendering pipelines and rendering techniques
  • Hands‑on experience with WebAssembly (WASM), Web APIs, WebGPU, WebGL, or equivalent graphics technologies
  • Experience building real‑time, data‑intensive web applications
  • Solid full‑stack fundamentals and the ability to work across frontend and backend boundaries
  • Strong focus on performance, memory usage, and responsiveness under heavy data loads
  • Ability to write clean, testable code and provide constructive code reviews
  • Desire to take technical ownership, influence architecture, and mentor other engineers
Bonus Points
  • Experience optimizing rendering pipelines for large, frequently updating datasets
  • Familiarity with browser internals and performance profiling tools
  • Experience with Rust or C++
  • Background in trading, finance, or other real‑time data‑driven domains
Benefits
  • Discretionary bonus eligibility
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • HSA, FSA, and Dependent Care options
  • Employer Paid Group Term Life and AD&D Insurance
  • Voluntary Life & AD&D insurance
