What is a Rust software developer?

A Rust Software Developer is a programmer who specializes in using the Rust programming language to build software applications. Rust is known for its focus on safety, speed, and concurrency, making it popular for systems programming, web services, and performance-critical tasks. Rust Software Developers may work on a variety of projects, from operating systems and embedded devices to backend web servers and command-line tools. Their responsibilities include writing, testing, and maintaining code, as well as collaborating with other developers to design robust and efficient systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Rust software developer?

To thrive as a Rust Software Developer, you need a solid background in systems programming, memory management, and proficiency in Rust, often supported by a degree in computer science or related experience. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, build tools such as Cargo, and experience with cross-platform development are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set outstanding candidates apart. These abilities are essential for building safe, efficient, and reliable software in demanding technical environments.

What are some common challenges faced by Rust software developers when working on large-scale projects?

Rust Software Developers often encounter challenges related to managing complex codebases, especially as projects scale. The language's strict ownership and borrowing rules, while beneficial for safety and concurrency, can make refactoring and integrating with legacy systems more time-consuming. Additionally, since Rust is still a relatively new language, developers may face limited library support or community resources for certain specialized tasks. Collaborating closely with teammates and leveraging thorough documentation helps to streamline workflows and overcome these hurdles.

What is the difference between Rust Software vs C++ Developer?

AspectRust SoftwareC++ Developer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Computer Science, Rust certifications (optional)Bachelor's in Computer Science, C++ certifications (optional)
Work EnvironmentTech companies, startups, embedded systemsSoftware firms, game development, embedded systems
Industry UsageEmerging in systems programming, web assembly, safety-critical appsWidely used in software, gaming, systems, and embedded development
Search & Comparison IntentUnderstanding Rust's role vs C++ in development

Rust Software developers focus on safe, concurrent programming using Rust, often in modern systems and web assembly projects. C++ Developers work primarily with performance-critical applications across various industries. While both roles require programming expertise, Rust emphasizes safety and modern syntax, whereas C++ is known for its performance and legacy codebases.

  • Define and enforce engineering standards, patterns, and system design

  • Partner with engineering managers and team leads to unblock teams and improve delivery velocity

Job description

Our innovative culture thrives on collaboration, data-driven decisions, and a startup mindset. Join our team and enjoy top-tier benefits, unlimited PTO, flexible schedules, free lunches, and the opportunity to work alongside a world-class team of professionals.

About the Role

We are looking for a Staff Software Engineer to serve as a technical anchor across our engineering teams. This role goes beyond writing code; you will shape how we build, influence architecture decisions across products, and elevate the engineers around you. Youโ€™ll operate at the intersection of deep technical expertise and organizational leadership, helping define standards, remove systemic blockers, and drive outcomes that span team boundaries.

What Youโ€™ll Do

Technical Leadership

  • Own and drive architecture decisions for complex, cross-cutting systems
  • Define and enforce engineering standards patterns, anti-patterns, code quality, and system design
  • Conduct architecture reviews and provide high-signal feedback across teams
  • Identify and resolve technical debt before it compounds

Organizational Impact

  • Partner with engineering managers and team leads to unblock teams and improve delivery velocity
  • Mentor and grow senior engineers; actively invest in the technical depth of the org
  • Bridge the gap between teams surfacing dependencies, aligning on shared infrastructure, and reducing duplication
  • Contribute to hiring by defining bar-raising interview criteria and participating in technical evaluations

Strategic Influence

  • Translate business goals into technical strategy and vice versa
  • Participate in roadmap planning with a long-horizon view on scalability, maintainability, and risk
  • Advocate for platform investments that pay dividends across multiple products
  • Communicate technical direction clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders

Who You Are

  • 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, with demonstrated growth into senior or staff-level scope
  • Deep understanding of software design patterns and anti-patterns; knowing not just what to build, but what to avoid and why
  • Strong grasp of data structures, algorithms, and systems design at scale
  • Experience driving architecture across multiple teams or services
  • Ability to navigate and contribute across polyglot architectures; comfortable reasoning about tradeoffs when systems are built in different languages, runtimes, and paradigms, and capable of making sound technical decisions without requiring a single-stack rewrite
  • Proven ability to influence without authority and lead through technical credibility
  • Fluency in at least one strongly typed, imperative language (C++, C#, Java, Rust, Go, etc.)
  • Proficiency with Git and collaborative development workflows

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with C++ in a large-scale codebase (Chromium experience is a strong plus)

We're a technology company focused on building innovative solutions that make a difference. Join our team of passionate developers, designers, and strategists.
