Rust Linux Kernel information
What are Rust Linux Kernel developers?
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Rust Linux Kernel Developer, and why are they important?
What is the difference between Rust Linux Kernel vs C Linux Kernel Developer?
| Aspect | Rust Linux Kernel | C Linux Kernel Developer |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Knowledge of Rust programming, Linux kernel basics | Proficiency in C, Linux kernel development experience |
| Work Environment | Contributing to Linux kernel modules using Rust, Linux environment | Developing and maintaining Linux kernel code in C |
| Industry Usage | Emerging in kernel development, experimental projects | Standard in Linux kernel development |
| Common Search/Comparison | Often compared for language choice in kernel modules | Traditional role, baseline for kernel development |
The main difference between a Rust Linux Kernel developer and a C Linux Kernel Developer lies in the programming language used. Rust developers focus on leveraging Rust's safety features for kernel modules, while C developers work with the traditional C language. Both roles require Linux kernel knowledge, but Rust is newer and less widespread in kernel development, making it an emerging area compared to the well-established C role.
What are some common challenges faced when working on Rust integration within the Linux kernel, and how do teams typically address them?

Job description
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Containerization & Virtualisation Engineer based in Netherlands.
This role sits at the core of modern cloud infrastructure engineering, focusing on the design, development, and evolution of container and virtualization technologies that power large-scale distributed systems. You will work on deeply technical, open-source-driven projects spanning the kernel through userspace, contributing to technologies that enable secure, performant, and scalable cloud-native environments. The environment is highly collaborative and globally distributed, bringing together engineers working across containers, virtual machines, orchestration platforms, and low-level system components. You will engage directly with upstream communities while building mission-critical software used across cloud, AI, and enterprise workloads. This is a hands-on engineering role where performance, security, and reliability are central to every decision. It is ideal for engineers passionate about operating systems, systems programming, and shaping the future of cloud infrastructure.
- Design, develop, and implement new features across containerization and virtualization systems, ensuring scalability, performance, and security.
- Contribute to low-level system components spanning kernel, networking, storage, and userspace infrastructure.
- Engage with open-source and upstream communities to influence and align technical direction.
- Conduct security reviews and implement defense-in-depth strategies across cloud-native systems.
- Build, monitor, and optimize performance benchmarks to ensure system efficiency and reliability.
- Collaborate with globally distributed engineering teams to design and deliver complex system features.
- Debug and resolve critical system issues across container and virtualization stacks.
- Review code contributions and ensure adherence to high engineering and quality standards.
Requirements:
- Strong academic background in Computer Science, Engineering, or related STEM field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Proven experience working on open-source container or virtualization technologies.
- Hands-on experience with low-level systems development, including kernel or systems programming.
- Proficiency in languages such as Go, Rust, C, or C++.
- Solid experience with Linux environments (Ubuntu or Debian preferred).
- Strong understanding of distributed systems, microservices, and cloud infrastructure concepts.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work effectively in remote, distributed teams.
- Strong analytical mindset, curiosity, and high level of ownership and accountability.
- Professional-level English communication skills (written and spoken).
Benefits:
- Remote-first work environment with global collaboration.
- Annual performance-based compensation reviews and bonus opportunities.
- Learning and development budget for continuous growth.
- Paid annual leave and parental leave policies.
- Employee assistance and wellness support programs.
- Opportunities for international travel and in-person team gatherings.
- Recognition programs and performance-based rewards.
- Travel support benefits for global company events.
