What is the average salary for a Rust engineer?

The average salary for a Rust Engineer varies depending on experience, location, and the specific industry. In the United States, Rust Engineers typically earn between $100,000 and $160,000 per year, with some senior or specialized roles offering higher compensation. Remote Rust Engineer positions may also offer competitive salaries, especially given the growing demand for Rust expertise in systems programming, blockchain, and backend development. Benefits, bonuses, and stock options can further increase total compensation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Rust engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Rust Engineer, you need strong proficiency in Rust programming, systems programming concepts, and software engineering fundamentals, typically backed by a degree in computer science or related experience. Familiarity with tools like Cargo, Git, CI/CD pipelines, and knowledge of common frameworks and libraries in the Rust ecosystem are important. Effective problem-solving, teamwork, and attention to detail are soft skills that help you excel in this role. These technical and interpersonal skills are essential for building reliable, high-performance software and collaborating in modern development environments.

What are some common challenges Rust engineers face when working on large-scale projects?

Rust Engineers working on large-scale projects often encounter challenges such as integrating Rust with existing codebases written in other languages, managing complex dependencies, and ensuring code safety without sacrificing performance. Collaboration with cross-functional teams is essential, especially when introducing Rust into environments dominated by other technologies. Additionally, because Rust has a steep learning curve, mentoring less-experienced team members and maintaining high code quality are important aspects of the role.

What is the difference between Rust Engineer Salary vs C++ Developer Salary?

Job description

Axiom Trade is building the future of retail trading. As opportunities migrate on-chain, Axiom's mission is to make discovering and trading digital assets fast, powerful, and intuitive. Serving millions of active users and facilitating more than $100M in daily trading volume, Axiom is operated by a high-ownership, fast-moving engineering team based in Austin.

Role Summary

Rust powers Axiom’s critical path across low-latency services, real-time data streaming, and trade execution. As a Rust Engineer, you will build and operate high-throughput backend services across 300k+ lines of code, index Solana and EVM chains in real time where sub-10ms latency makes a product difference, and design concurrent in-memory caching systems that shield underlying databases.

Key Responsibilities
  • Critical-Path Infrastructure: Build, operate, and scale production Rust services running continuously under heavy retail and market load.

  • Real-Time Chain Indexing: Develop ultra-low-latency real-time indexing engines for Solana and EVM chains.

  • Concurrency & Memory Management: Write async Rust using Tokio, optimizing concurrent in-memory state models to serve reads with minimal database overhead.

  • Data Layer Optimization: Push Postgres, Redis, Kafka, and ClickHouse to their performance limits and select optimal data backends for varying workloads.

  • Cross-Language Consistency: Maintain wire‑level protocol and schema agreement between the Rust and TypeScript fleet services.

  • Profiling & Performance Defense: Profile production code (flamegraphs, allocation pressure, tail latency) and uphold rigorous engineering standards.

Requirements & Qualifications Must-Haves
  • Production Rust: Deep production experience with asynchronous Rust and the tokio runtime ecosystem.

  • Systems Foundations: Complete fluency with Rust ownership, lifetimes, borrow checker mechanics, and multi‑threaded concurrency in production codebases.

  • Load Reliability: Proven experience building, deploying, and maintaining services that operate continuously under sustained high concurrency and load.

  • Execution & Ownership: Strong debugging fundamentals, high urgency, and comfort taking end‑to‑end ownership in a fast‑paced environment.

Nice‑to‑Haves
  • Latency & Performance: Experience with low‑level latency profiling, flamegraphs, memory allocation tuning, and optimizing p99 tail latency.

  • Ecosystem Crates: Production background with sqlx, tokio‑tungstenite, rdkafka, or Redis crates.

  • In-Memory Concurrency: Hands‑on experience with dashmap, arc‑swap, or custom lock‑free data structures.

  • Streaming Ingestion: Experience with gRPC, Solana Geyser plugins, Redpanda/Kafka, or large‑scale WebSocket fan‑out architectures.

  • Blockchain Internals: In‑depth understanding of Solana or EVM execution environments, node RPCs, and on‑chain mechanics.

Compensation & Benefits
  • Annual Base Salary: $320,000 – $465,000 USD

  • Bonus: Performance‑based bonus structure
