What is a Rust Embedded?

A Rust Embedded job involves developing software for embedded systems using the Rust programming language. These systems include microcontrollers, IoT devices, and real-time applications where performance, safety, and reliability are critical. Rust's memory safety features and concurrency support make it well-suited for embedded development, reducing common issues like buffer overflows and data races. Developers in this field work with low-level hardware interactions, device drivers, and firmware while optimizing for constraints like power consumption and processing speed.

What does a Rust Embedded do?

As a Rust Embedded engineer, your daily tasks often include designing, coding, and debugging firmware or low-level drivers in Rust, conducting hardware-software integration tests, and working closely with cross-functional teams such as hardware engineers and QA specialists. You may also participate in code reviews, optimize system performance, and document technical specifications to support maintainable development. Troubleshooting and resolving issues that arise during real-world device deployment is also a common responsibility. This role involves a mix of independent problem-solving and collaborative teamwork to ensure reliable, high-performance embedded solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Rust Embedded position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Rust Embedded professional, you need strong proficiency in the Rust programming language, embedded systems design, and low-level hardware interaction, often supported by a degree in computer engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field. Experience with microcontroller platforms (such as ARM Cortex-M), version control systems like Git, and tools such as embedded debuggers or simulators is commonly required; certifications in embedded development or safety standards (e.g. ISO 26262) can be advantageous. Effective problem-solving, attention to detail, and strong collaboration skills are essential for successful project delivery. These skills ensure reliability, efficiency, and safety in developing robust embedded software for critical hardware applications.

Is Rust good for embedded systems?

Rust is increasingly used for embedded systems development due to its focus on safety, performance, and low-level control. It offers features like ownership and zero-cost abstractions, making it suitable for resource-constrained environments, and is supported by tools like Cargo and embedded-specific crates. Many embedded developers choose Rust for its reliability and modern language features.

Forward Deployed Engineer

Blockstream

New York, NY • Remote

Full-time

Posted 12 days ago

Job description

Blockstream was founded in 2014 by Dr. Adam Back and a group of fellow cryptographers and engineers passionate about Bitcoin and its potential to change the future of finance. We have become a market leader in Bitcoin security and Layer-2 technologies. Our products are designed to make financial systems more efficient, secure, and robust.

We're seeking a Forward Deployed Engineer embedded directly inside customer engineering teams, writing the code, building the tooling, integrations and configurations needed to get Blockstream's products into production. Additionally you ship what you build back into the core product.

Operating within the Consulting Services organization, the Forward Deployed Engineer partners closely with Product Management, Engineering, Enterprise Sales, and Delivery teams to help customers successfully implement and adopt Blockstream's products.

This is not a traditional configuration or support role. You will spend significant time working directly alongside customer engineering, operations, and technology teams, often onsite, to understand complex banking environments, solve technical challenges, and deliver production-ready solutions. As the technical bridge between customers and Blockstream, you will play a critical role in accelerating customer success while providing valuable implementation insights that continuously improve our products and delivery methodology.

What You'll Be Doing (Responsibilities):

Customer Delivery & Implementation

  • AI-first prototyping: Use AI-assisted development to stand up minimum viable solutions or proof of concepts on short turnaround notice, proving Enterprise Product value early in an engagement and hardening the winning prototypes into use case based playbooks.

  • Tech Pre-Sales: Support Enterprise Sales in technical pre-sales, RFP/RFI and security questionnaire responses; contribute to SOW scoping, effort estimation, and scope-change management.

  • Delivery: Own the technical delivery of Blockstream enterprise software from project kickoff through production deployment and post launch support

  • Financial Institutions: Work directly with financial institutions to understand business processes, operational workflows, and technical environments.

  • Configure, deploy, and optimize Blockstream products based on customer requirements and approved solution designs.

  • Success Criteria: Execute implementation planning, system configuration, testing, User Acceptance Testing (UAT), production deployment, and post-go-live support. Define success criteria, milestones and own implementation.

  • Deliver administrator and end-user enablement sessions to ensure successful customer adoption.

  • Enterprise integration: Integrate with core banking and capital-markets systems.

Engineering & Technical Delivery

  • Controlled environments: Deploy into on-premise, network-isolated, and air-gapped banking environments under formal change control, producing the security and audit evidence that compliance and pen-test reviews require.

  • Design and implement integrations between Blockstream enterprise products and customer systems using required integration interfaces and data pipeline technologies.

  • Troubleshoot complex technical, configuration, and integration challenges throughout the implementation lifecycle.

  • Work closely with customer engineering teams to ensure secure, scalable, and production-ready deployments.

  • Develop reusable deployment assets, implementation playbooks, technical documentation, and best practices.

  • Collaborate closely with Engineering to resolve product issues and improve implementation quality.

Customer Collaboration

Embed directly with customer teams to gain a deep understanding of their operating environment and technical challenges.

  • Facilitate technical workshops, architecture discussions, and implementation planning sessions.

  • Act as a trusted technical advisor throughout the implementation lifecycle.

  • Build strong relationships across customer Technology, Operations, Security, and Engineering functions.

Digital Assets Product Improvement Feedback Loop

  • Turn implementation learnings, customer feedback, and product enhancement opportunities into code

  • Identify repeatable deployment patterns across engagements and contribute to standardized implementation methodologies.

  • Partner with Product Management and Engineering to shape the roadmap and improve platform capabilities based on real customer implementations.

  • Help accelerate customer time-to-production through continuous improvement of deployment frameworks and best practices.

What We Look for In You (Required Qualifications):

  • 4-8 years of experience in Software Engineering, Forward Deployed Engineering, Solutions Engineering, Professional Services, Technical Consulting, Implementation Engineering, or Enterprise Software Delivery.

  • Proficiency in at least one systems or backend language (e.g. Python, Go, Rust) sufficient to build and ship integrations, tooling and services independently

  • Experience implementing and deploying enterprise software solutions within complex customer environments.

  • Strong understanding of protocol intermediation, enterprise integration patterns, cloud technologies, security fundamentals and modern software architectures.

  • Experience working directly with enterprise customers throughout implementation and deployment projects.

  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to translate business requirements into scalable technical solutions.

  • Comfortable collaborating across Product Management, Engineering, Enterprise Sales, and Consulting teams.

  • Strong customer-facing communication and stakeholder management skills.

  • Self-starter with proven ability to work independently while managing multiple customer engagements.

  • Willingness to travel regularly to customer locations across Europe.

  • Excellent English skills are required

Nice To Haves (Preferred Qualifications):

  • Experience working with financial institutions, like private banking, wealth management, custody, payments, treasury, or capital markets.

  • Background in Bitcoin, blockchain, digital assets, tokenization, or fintech.

  • Experience integrating enterprise software using APIs and modern integration frameworks.

  • Knowledge of cloud platforms, containerized deployments, or infrastructure automation.

  • Familiarity with Layer-2 technologies and digital asset infrastructure.

  • Experience contributing product feedback from customer implementations into engineering roadmaps.
