What is a Rust Embedded?

A Rust Embedded job involves developing software for embedded systems using the Rust programming language. These systems include microcontrollers, IoT devices, and real-time applications where performance, safety, and reliability are critical. Rust's memory safety features and concurrency support make it well-suited for embedded development, reducing common issues like buffer overflows and data races. Developers in this field work with low-level hardware interactions, device drivers, and firmware while optimizing for constraints like power consumption and processing speed.

What does a Rust Embedded do?

As a Rust Embedded engineer, your daily tasks often include designing, coding, and debugging firmware or low-level drivers in Rust, conducting hardware-software integration tests, and working closely with cross-functional teams such as hardware engineers and QA specialists. You may also participate in code reviews, optimize system performance, and document technical specifications to support maintainable development. Troubleshooting and resolving issues that arise during real-world device deployment is also a common responsibility. This role involves a mix of independent problem-solving and collaborative teamwork to ensure reliable, high-performance embedded solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Rust Embedded position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Rust Embedded professional, you need strong proficiency in the Rust programming language, embedded systems design, and low-level hardware interaction, often supported by a degree in computer engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field. Experience with microcontroller platforms (such as ARM Cortex-M), version control systems like Git, and tools such as embedded debuggers or simulators is commonly required; certifications in embedded development or safety standards (e.g. ISO 26262) can be advantageous. Effective problem-solving, attention to detail, and strong collaboration skills are essential for successful project delivery. These skills ensure reliability, efficiency, and safety in developing robust embedded software for critical hardware applications.

Is Rust good for embedded systems?

Rust is increasingly used for embedded systems development due to its focus on safety, performance, and low-level control. It offers features like ownership and zero-cost abstractions, making it suitable for resource-constrained environments, and is supported by tools like Cargo and embedded-specific crates. Many embedded developers choose Rust for its reliability and modern language features.

Job description

LEO is an initiative to increase global broadband access through a constellation of 3,236 satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO). Its mission is to bring fast, affordable broadband to unserved and underserved communities around the world. LEO will help close the digital divide by delivering fast, affordable broadband to a wide range of customers, including consumers, businesses, government agencies, and other organizations operating in places without reliable connectivity.
In this role, you will build software, tools, and automation that help engineering teams design, debug, validate, and operate complex satellite RF systems

You'll work across the stack - from embedded Linux services to cloud-based test infrastructure - creating solutions that accelerate hardware bring-up, streamline factory calibration, and improve system reliability. You don't need to be an RF expert on day one, but you should be a strong software engineer who learns fast and is comfortable going deep into unfamiliar domains.
Over time, you'll develop working knowledge of embedded Linux, 3GPP fundamentals, gNodeB
architecture, and RF system concepts.
This is an individual contributor role for someone who thrives on ambiguous technical problems, builds tools that make other engineers more productive, and wants direct impact on how satellite communication systems go from prototype to production.
About the team - The Amazon LEO Antenna SW Team develops software for the satellite payload antenna systems

We build the services, actors, and infrastructure that control antenna hardware - from VCXO clock disciplining to beamforming to factory calibration. We work hand in hand with hardware, RF, and systems engineering teams to bring antenna systems from prototype to orbit.
Export Control Requirement:
Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S

permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
Key job responsibilities
- Develop embedded software (Rust/C/C++) for Kuiper antenna systems
- Design and implement reliable services and daemons that run on resource-constrained hardware
- Participate in hardware bring-up, board validation, and factory test development
- Own software from requirements through deployment - including design, implementation, testing, and CI/CD
- Collaborate with hardware, RF, and systems engineering teams
- Review schematics, logic analyzer, and embedded software (bare-metal) trouble-shooting techniques. this make sense
