What is a Rust Embedded?

A Rust Embedded job involves developing software for embedded systems using the Rust programming language. These systems include microcontrollers, IoT devices, and real-time applications where performance, safety, and reliability are critical. Rust's memory safety features and concurrency support make it well-suited for embedded development, reducing common issues like buffer overflows and data races. Developers in this field work with low-level hardware interactions, device drivers, and firmware while optimizing for constraints like power consumption and processing speed.

What does a Rust Embedded do?

As a Rust Embedded engineer, your daily tasks often include designing, coding, and debugging firmware or low-level drivers in Rust, conducting hardware-software integration tests, and working closely with cross-functional teams such as hardware engineers and QA specialists. You may also participate in code reviews, optimize system performance, and document technical specifications to support maintainable development. Troubleshooting and resolving issues that arise during real-world device deployment is also a common responsibility. This role involves a mix of independent problem-solving and collaborative teamwork to ensure reliable, high-performance embedded solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Rust Embedded position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Rust Embedded professional, you need strong proficiency in the Rust programming language, embedded systems design, and low-level hardware interaction, often supported by a degree in computer engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field. Experience with microcontroller platforms (such as ARM Cortex-M), version control systems like Git, and tools such as embedded debuggers or simulators is commonly required; certifications in embedded development or safety standards (e.g. ISO 26262) can be advantageous. Effective problem-solving, attention to detail, and strong collaboration skills are essential for successful project delivery. These skills ensure reliability, efficiency, and safety in developing robust embedded software for critical hardware applications.

Is Rust good for embedded systems?

Rust is increasingly used for embedded systems development due to its focus on safety, performance, and low-level control. It offers features like ownership and zero-cost abstractions, making it suitable for resource-constrained environments, and is supported by tools like Cargo and embedded-specific crates. Many embedded developers choose Rust for its reliability and modern language features.

Job description

Application deadline: Aug 23, 2026
Are you interested in building embedded software for leading edge hardware to build end to end 400G+ solutions. Amazon is expanding Amazon Web Services (AWS) connectivity and is looking for help.
AWS seeks a Software Development Engineer with experience developing embedded software on custom hardware including the most advanced FPGA SoCs. They will help develop, integrate, and test scalable high assurance embedded systems in the AWS technology ecosystem.
We develop AWS owned hardware solutions in order to scale globally, minimize cost, and maximize value for our customers

We are a growing team of hardware, software and FPGA engineers with a dedicated product development lab.
By working together on behalf of our customers, we are building the future one innovative product, service, and idea at a time. Are you ready to embrace the challenge. Come build the future with us.
This position requires that the candidate selected must currently possess and maintain an active TS/SCI security clearance

The position further requires that, after start, the selected candidate obtain and maintain an active TS/SCI security clearance with polygraph or commensurate clearance for each government agency for which they perform AWS work.
Key job responsibilities
- Develop embedded software using Rust, and integrate with third party libraries to build end to end high assurance 400G+ solutions
- Develop low level drivers for ARM and RISC-V targets, Linux drivers and kernel modules, business logic, and scalable software solutions to interoperate with AWS services
- Implement cryptographic and security requirements from government standards into embedded software designs
- Implement keying functionality including key generation, establishment, distribution, storage, and zeroization in embedded software to meet government certification standards
- Collaborate with design and system engineers to perform tradeoffs and implement solutions for customers
- Participate in design meetings to plan development and review peer designs
- Write and maintain unit tests, integration tests, and hardware-in-the-loop tests using CI/CD pipelines
- Debug issues across the hardware/software boundary including RTL, firmware, and driver interactions
A day in the life
You will work on a cross-functional team of hardware and software developers, writing embedded software in Rust to interact with custom hardware. You will use and develop CI/CD pipelines to automatically run your own unit tests, and hardware in the loop tests. You help deploy embedded software onto hardware targets and help debug issues that come along in RTL, hardware, or software

You will develop and document software sub-systems and components in Rust, you will coordinate with the team daily to make design decisions, resolve blockers, and review code.
