What is Rust development?

Rust development refers to the process of building software applications using the Rust programming language. Rust is known for its focus on safety, performance, and concurrency, making it ideal for creating reliable and efficient systems, such as web servers, command-line tools, and embedded devices. Developers use Rust to write code that minimizes common programming errors like null pointer dereferencing and data races, thanks to its strict compiler checks and ownership model. The Rust ecosystem includes a rich package manager (Cargo) and a supportive community, making it accessible for both beginners and experienced developers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Rust developer?

To thrive as a Rust Developer, you need strong programming fundamentals, proficiency in Rust, and a solid understanding of systems programming concepts, often supported by a computer science degree or relevant experience. Familiarity with version control (e.g., Git), build tools like Cargo, and knowledge of concurrent and asynchronous programming are typically required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and collaborative communication skills help developers stand out in complex project environments. These skills ensure the creation of safe, efficient, and reliable software, leveraging Rust's unique strengths for high-performance applications.

What are common challenges Rust developers face when working on large-scale projects, and how can they overcome them?

Rust developers working on large-scale projects often encounter challenges related to managing complex codebases and ensuring efficient collaboration with teammates. The strict ownership and borrowing rules in Rust can initially slow development, especially when integrating with legacy systems or external libraries. To overcome these hurdles, teams typically adopt clear coding standards, make use of Rust's robust module system for code organization, and leverage tools like cargo workspaces for dependency management. Regular code reviews and open communication also help maintain code quality and prevent integration issues.

How to become a Rust developer?

To become a Rust developer, you should learn the Rust programming language through official tutorials and documentation, gain experience with systems programming, and practice building projects. Familiarity with tools like Cargo and understanding of memory safety concepts are also important. Earning certifications or contributing to open-source Rust projects can further enhance your skills and employability.

What does a Rust developer do?

A Rust developer writes and maintains software using the Rust programming language, focusing on performance, safety, and concurrency. They often work on system-level applications, embedded systems, or performance-critical software, utilizing tools like Cargo and adhering to best coding practices. Strong knowledge of systems programming and debugging skills are essential for this role.

Job description

Title: Heavy Industrial Structural / Civil Engineer

Shift: First Shift (Standard Business Hours, Monday – Friday)

Salary: $90,000 – $100,000 per year, plus profit sharing (dependent on experience)

Heavy Industrial Structural / Civil Engineer Role:

The Heavy Industrial Structural / Civil Engineer exists to design, analyze, and ensure the structural integrity of high-consequence heavy industrial plant assets. In this role, you bridge office-based 3D analytical modeling with hands-on field diagnostic assessments to engineer building frameworks, crane runway systems, and specialized dynamic machine foundations for major industrial client sites.

Heavy Industrial Structural / Civil Engineer Responsibilities:

  • Design heavy structural steel buildings, overhead crane runway systems, monorails, elevated platforms, and dynamic machine foundations
  • Conduct hands-on field diagnostic assessments, condition surveys, and drone or laser inspections within active manufacturing facilities
  • Perform 2D and 3D Finite Element Analysis (FEA), dynamic load modeling, vibration assessments, and capacity evaluation studies
  • Engineer custom repair, retrofit, and reinforcement strategies for structural components compromised by fatigue, corrosion, thermal expansion, or overload
  • Develop complete engineering design packages including technical calculations, detailed specifications, scope of work documents, and Bills of Materials (BOM)
  • Collaborate with internal mechanical, electrical, and certified welding inspection teams to deliver downtime-minimizing engineering solutions
  • Support forensic investigations and Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) for structural and industrial equipment failures
  • Review structural engineering drawings and technical deliverables for full compliance with applicable design codes
  • Assist in project scope development and technical presentation deliverables for client representatives

Heavy Industrial Structural / Civil Engineer Reporting Relationships:

In this position, candidates report directly to our client's Engineering Manager / Structural Practice Leader and work alongside multi-disciplinary project teams without direct supervisory responsibilities.

About You:

  • Hold a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (BSCE) or Structural Engineering (BSSE) from an ABET-accredited institution
  • Maintain an active Professional Engineer (PE) license in Ohio or possess immediate reciprocity eligibility, with EIT/FE certification considered
  • Possess 3 to 8+ years of experience in heavy industrial structural design, steel mill manufacturing, or industrial engineering consulting
  • Demonstrate technical proficiency with AISC, ACI, IBC, and specialized crane design standards including CMAA and AIST Technical Report No. 13
  • Utilize structural analysis software such as STAAD.Pro, RISA-3D, or ANSYS for complex load modeling
  • Operate drafting and modeling platforms including AutoCAD and Revit
  • Apply core knowledge of shallow and deep pile foundation design, dynamic loading mechanics, structural weld integrity, and failure analysis
  • Maintain a field-ready mindset comfortable navigating active industrial manufacturing environments
  • Possess strong technical writing skills and clear client-facing communication capabilities

Next Steps:

If you are an analytical problem-solver and a field-ready engineer, we would like to hear from you. Please submit your resume to our recruiting team to initiate a confidential candidate consultation.
