What is Rust development?

Rust development refers to the process of building software applications using the Rust programming language. Rust is known for its focus on safety, performance, and concurrency, making it ideal for creating reliable and efficient systems, such as web servers, command-line tools, and embedded devices. Developers use Rust to write code that minimizes common programming errors like null pointer dereferencing and data races, thanks to its strict compiler checks and ownership model. The Rust ecosystem includes a rich package manager (Cargo) and a supportive community, making it accessible for both beginners and experienced developers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Rust developer?

To thrive as a Rust Developer, you need strong programming fundamentals, proficiency in Rust, and a solid understanding of systems programming concepts, often supported by a computer science degree or relevant experience. Familiarity with version control (e.g., Git), build tools like Cargo, and knowledge of concurrent and asynchronous programming are typically required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and collaborative communication skills help developers stand out in complex project environments. These skills ensure the creation of safe, efficient, and reliable software, leveraging Rust's unique strengths for high-performance applications.

What are common challenges Rust developers face when working on large-scale projects, and how can they overcome them?

Rust developers working on large-scale projects often encounter challenges related to managing complex codebases and ensuring efficient collaboration with teammates. The strict ownership and borrowing rules in Rust can initially slow development, especially when integrating with legacy systems or external libraries. To overcome these hurdles, teams typically adopt clear coding standards, make use of Rust's robust module system for code organization, and leverage tools like cargo workspaces for dependency management. Regular code reviews and open communication also help maintain code quality and prevent integration issues.

How to become a Rust developer?

To become a Rust developer, you should learn the Rust programming language through official tutorials and documentation, gain experience with systems programming, and practice building projects. Familiarity with tools like Cargo and understanding of memory safety concepts are also important. Earning certifications or contributing to open-source Rust projects can further enhance your skills and employability.

What does a Rust developer do?

A Rust developer writes and maintains software using the Rust programming language, focusing on performance, safety, and concurrency. They often work on system-level applications, embedded systems, or performance-critical software, utilizing tools like Cargo and adhering to best coding practices. Strong knowledge of systems programming and debugging skills are essential for this role.

Job description

Role Overview: The Client Platform technology team builds and evolves the core platform that powers Citadel Securities’ client-facing businesses. This platform serves as a critical foundation supporting connectivity, order management, and analytics across multiple asset classes.

We are embarking on a multi-year strategic effort to modernize the platform’s infrastructure. As a Software Engineer in Test, you’ll contribute to this transformation by building Python‑first frameworks and C++‑adjacent hooks to verify distributed systems correctness, accelerate CI/CD, and protect latency‑sensitive releases across equities (cash/options) and beyond.

Responsibilities
  • Build test harnesses that simulate client/exchange and OMS order lifecycle workflows across equities cash and options
  • Author automated tests (unit/integration/contract/perf) and grow CI/CD quality gates; make runs deterministic via golden traces/pcaps and time control
  • Design performance/latency test rigs (P50/P99.9, jitter, GC/allocator impact) with reproducible results and automatic regressions gates in CI
  • Create contract tests and service virtualization (exchange simulators, market‑data replayers) to decouple teams and speed releases
  • Develop failure‑mode/chaos scenarios (disconnects, throttling, slow consumers, sequence resets, clock skew, backpressure)
  • Drive cross‑repo test architecture/refactors (shared fixtures, contracts, pipelines) to improve coverage and reliability
  • Partner with development, SRE, and the trading desk to define and automate end‑to‑end scenarios that verify system correctness and business workflows
Qualifications
  • Proven ownership mindset: comfortable debugging unfamiliar systems, writing docs, and driving cross‑team initiatives
  • Expert Python for production‑grade automation
  • Ability to read/modify C++ test code and hook Python harnesses into C++ components
  • Strong Linux and networking fundamentals (TCP/UDP, sockets, pcap/Wireshark)
  • CI/CD experience (Jenkins/GitHub Actions, Git, CMake); containerized, reproducible test environments
  • Hands‑on design of performance/reliability tests (latency, throughput, backpressure) and flaky‑test triage
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills
Nice to Have
  • FIX engine experience (QuickFIX or proprietary), exchange simulators, OMS/EMS flows, DMA/algos, drop copy
  • Observability for tests (Prometheus/Grafana/Jaeger/Tempo; log correlation)
  • Data & infra: kdb+/q, Kafka, low‑latency instrumentation
  • Rust/Go or FP exposure (Haskell/OCaml); contract testing (Pact) and property‑based testing (Hypothesis)
  • Prior experience in financial systems or large‑scale distributed environments

In accordance with applicable law, the base salary range for this role is $175,000 to $350,000. In addition, the employee who fills this role will be eligible to participate in a discretionary incentive compensation program, as well as a wide array of benefit programs, such as medical and life insurance, retirement and tax‑free savings plans, and access to other healthcare programs.
