What is a Rust developer internship?

A Rust Developer Internship is a temporary position designed for students or entry-level developers to gain hands-on experience working with the Rust programming language. Interns typically assist in developing, testing, and debugging Rust applications, often contributing to open-source projects or company software. They may work alongside experienced developers to learn best practices and improve their coding skills. This internship helps build a strong foundation in systems programming, performance optimization, and memory safety.

What types of projects do Rust developer interns typically work on during their internship?

Rust Developer Interns often contribute to backend infrastructure, tools, or application features, working on tasks such as optimizing code, fixing bugs, adding functionality, or writing documentation. Depending on the company, you may collaborate on open-source initiatives, assist in maintenance of production systems, or help build new services from the ground up. Interns frequently participate in code reviews, team meetings, and cross-functional brainstorming sessions, ensuring exposure to professional workflows. This hands-on environment is designed to strengthen your programming skills while giving you valuable experience in real-world software development practices.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Rust developer internship position, and why are they important?

A Rust Developer Internship typically requires a foundational understanding of Rust programming, knowledge of systems programming concepts, and experience with version control systems like Git. Familiarity with development tools such as Cargo, command-line interfaces, and basic debugging methods is expected, while formal certifications are less common but a portfolio or relevant coursework is advantageous. Strong problem-solving skills, a willingness to learn, effective communication, and teamwork elevate an intern's potential in this collaborative environment. These skills ensure that interns can quickly adapt, contribute to ongoing projects, and thrive in professional software development teams.

Job description

Summit TRC is seeking motivated students for our Engineering Intern/Co-op program. We hire across multiple engineering disciplines - Software Engineering, Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), Systems Integration Engineering, and DevSecOps - and match each intern to a team based on their background, coursework, and interests. Wherever you land, you'll work alongside experienced engineers on real problems supporting UAS products and other Defense and Space programs, not busywork.

Possible focus areas include:

  • Software Engineering - building and deploying software (C#, Java, Python, C++, Rust) that enables new capabilities on UAS products
  • Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) - applying MBSE tools (e.g., Cameo) and frameworks (SysML, DoDAF, OOSEM) across the systems engineering lifecycle
  • Systems Integration Engineering - integrating, deploying, and troubleshooting systems across Operating Systems, virtual machines, containers, and networks

Responsibilities (specific tasks will depend on your team placement):

  • Contribute to real project work under the guidance of senior engineers - writing code, supporting requirements development, building models, or assisting with systems integration, depending on your track
  • Assist in analyzing technical requirements and supporting design or architecture decisions
  • Help with documentation such as technical write-ups, test reports, configuration guides, or specifications
  • Participate in testing, integration, or troubleshooting activities alongside cross-functional teams
  • Collaborate with engineers, stakeholders, and other interns across disciplines
  • Present your work and contributions to the team at the end of your internship/co-op term

Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related technical discipline (Junior standing or above)
  • US Citizen, able to obtain a Secret or higher security clearance
  • Strong problem-solving instincts and eagerness to learn
  • Comfortable working with Windows and/or Linux and using the command line
  • Able to work well within a team and take initiative on open-ended tasks

Relevant coursework, projects, or skills in any of the following are a plus (tell us which track interests you most):

  • Programming in C#, Java, Python, C++, or Rust; object-oriented design; unit/integration testing; Git or other version control
  • SysML, Cameo, MagicDraw, Sparx Enterprise Architect, or other MBSE tooling; MagicGrid, OOSEM, DoDAF, or UAF frameworks
  • Scripting/automation (PowerShell, Bash, Python, Ansible); virtualization (VMware, Hyper-V); containers; networking fundamentals
