What is a Rust Crypto developer?

A Rust Crypto developer is a software engineer who specializes in building cryptographic software using the Rust programming language. They focus on developing secure, efficient, and reliable cryptographic libraries, tools, or protocols. Rust's strong memory safety guarantees and performance make it a popular choice for cryptography, and developers working in this field must have a strong understanding of both cryptographic principles and the unique features of Rust. Their work is critical in ensuring data security for a variety of applications, from blockchain to secure communications.

How does a Rust Crypto developer typically collaborate with security and blockchain teams in a project?

As a Rust Crypto developer, you’ll often work closely with both security experts and blockchain engineers to ensure cryptographic protocols are implemented securely and efficiently. Collaboration usually involves regular code reviews, joint threat modeling sessions, and sharing updates on algorithm changes or vulnerabilities. Effective communication is key, as your work directly impacts the safety and reliability of blockchain-based applications. Expect to participate in cross-functional meetings to align on best practices, design decisions, and integration efforts.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Rust Crypto engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Rust Crypto Engineer, you need strong proficiency in Rust programming, a solid foundation in cryptography concepts, and experience with secure software development. Familiarity with cryptographic libraries (like RustCrypto), version control systems (such as Git), and relevant certifications such as Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) are often valuable. Meticulous attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective collaboration skills help ensure robust, secure code and successful teamwork. These skills are critical for developing reliable cryptographic solutions that protect sensitive data and maintain system integrity.

What is the difference between Rust Crypto vs Blockchain Developer?

AspectRust CryptoBlockchain Developer
Required CredentialsProgramming skills in Rust, cryptography knowledgeProgramming skills, blockchain protocols, smart contract experience
Work EnvironmentCrypto projects, security-focused teams, software developmentBlockchain platforms, decentralized applications, fintech companies
Industry UsageCryptography, security, blockchain infrastructureBlockchain platforms, decentralized apps, cryptocurrency projects

Rust Crypto specialists focus on cryptographic security and developing secure software using Rust, often within blockchain or security projects. Blockchain Developers build and maintain blockchain applications, smart contracts, and decentralized systems. While both roles work within the blockchain industry, Rust Crypto emphasizes cryptography and security, whereas Blockchain Developers focus on application development and protocol implementation.

Job description

 Job Description:

Who We Are

We are building core financial infrastructure for the fastest-growing crypto derivatives exchange in the world — a platform generating over $1B in annualised revenue at 99% net margin, operating in a sector worth $20–30B annually. Our focus is Multi-Asset Margin — enabling traders to post variable forms of collateral without liquidating positions, a capability that represents over 86% of all crypto accounts globally. This is not a side project. This is foundational, high-stakes infrastructure where performance, precision, and reliability are everything. If you've built systems where microseconds matter and failure is not an option, this is your environment.

The Role

Join our Infrastructure & Platform team and take ownership of the scalable, high-performance systems that sit at the heart of our platform. You'll design and operate core components across compute, storage, and networking — working closely with our product team to deliver infrastructure that never blinks.

Where You'll Work

This is a fully on-site role, 5 days a week in our NYC office. We are a team that thrives on in-person collaboration and fast-paced, hands-on problem solving. We will also consider strong candidates based in San Francisco, where we are opening a new office.

What You'll Do

  • Write low-level, production-grade code in Rust for services that demand speed and reliability in real-time environments
  • Deploy and manage compute resources and containers for custom services and integrations
  • Automate scaling, load balancing, and congestion control across compute and database layers
  • Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines for automated deployment, rollback, and continuous delivery
  • Monitor and tune system performance across CPU, memory, I/O, and network for maximum throughput and resiliency
  • Build indexing and explorer services to enable live, fast, and expressive data channels
  • Provision and optimize databases across time-series, relational, key-value, and in-memory workloads

What We're Looking For

Must-haves:

  • Rust is non-negotiable — you are a strong, practised low-level developer with Rust at your core
  • 3+ years building production-grade infrastructure at a reputable, established company with real scale
  • Hands-on experience managing compute instances (e.g. EC2) and/or container orchestration (e.g. Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Solid networking fundamentals — VPCs, load balancers, NAT, VPN, and network security
  • Able and willing to work fully on-site, 5 days a week in NYC, San Francisco considered.
  • Authorized to work in the United States

Nice to have:

  • Experience with CI/CD tools (e.g. Jenkins, GitHub Actions) and infrastructure as code (e.g. Terraform, CloudFormation)
  • Familiarity with time-series databases (e.g. TimescaleDB, InfluxDB) and key-value stores (e.g. DynamoDB, Redis)
  • Experience profiling and optimizing low-level system performance under high load

Who Thrives Here

This role is built for engineers who are energised by complexity, take pride in systems that perform under pressure, and want their work to matter at scale. If you come from a background in high-frequency trading, large-scale fintech, or performance-critical infrastructure — and you want to build something genuinely consequential — we want to hear from you.
