What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Runway Model, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Runway Model, you need strong physical presence, poise, and the ability to follow precise movement instructions, often supported by industry-standard measurements and experience. Familiarity with modeling portfolios, casting call procedures, and sometimes training from modeling schools are typical requirements. Confidence, adaptability, and professionalism are crucial soft skills that help models stand out during high-pressure shows and fittings. These skills and qualities are essential for representing brands effectively, meeting client expectations, and succeeding in the competitive fashion industry.

Search & Comparison IntentFocus on live runway work and catwalk skillsFocus on print, commercial, and editorial work

Runway Modeling primarily involves walking on the runway during fashion shows, emphasizing walk and presence. Fashion Modeling encompasses a broader range of modeling types, including print, editorial, and commercial work. While both roles require a strong portfolio and certain physical standards, runway modeling is more specialized in live event performance, whereas fashion modeling includes various media formats.

What are some common challenges faced by runway models during fashion shows, and how can they prepare for them?

Runway models often encounter challenges such as quick outfit changes, walking in unfamiliar or high-heeled shoes, and adapting to different runway layouts or show themes. To prepare, models practice walking in various types of footwear, rehearse quick changes with dressers backstage, and study the choreography or pacing expected by the designers. Maintaining composure and flexibility under pressure is key, as shows can be fast-paced and unpredictable. Building strong communication with stylists, designers, and fellow models also helps ensure smooth coordination during the event.

What is runway modeling?

Runway modeling is a type of modeling where models walk on a runway, or catwalk, to showcase clothing and accessories during fashion shows and events. The primary goal is to display designers’ latest collections to buyers, media, and the public. Runway models must have a strong presence, excellent posture, and the ability to convey the designer's vision through their walk and demeanor. Height, body proportions, and confidence are important qualities in this field. Runway modeling often serves as a platform for models to gain exposure and advance their careers in the fashion industry.

Is 30 too old to start modeling?

Runway modeling typically favors younger models, often in their teens or early twenties, but age is not an absolute barrier. Some agencies and clients seek models of various ages, especially for niche markets or mature fashion, and experience, confidence, and unique look can be valuable assets regardless of age.

How can I get into runway modeling?

To become a runway model, individuals typically need to meet specific height and measurement requirements, build a professional portfolio, and gain experience through local fashion shows or agencies. Signing with a reputable modeling agency can provide opportunities and guidance in securing runway work. Developing skills such as walking confidently and maintaining a healthy appearance is also important.

How much is a runway model paid?

Runway models' pay varies widely based on experience, market, and the type of show, but they typically earn between $200 and $1,000 per show. Top models or those working in major fashion weeks can earn significantly more, often supplementing income through agency fees and endorsements.

Basata

Job description

Chief of Staff
Location: Tempe, Arizona or Bay Area, California with frequent travel
About Basata
At Basata, we're rethinking the way healthcare practices get work done. Our AI-powered tools help automate the repetitive, time-consuming tasks that bog teams down, so staff can spend less time on admin and more time with patients.
We're a small, fast-moving team that loves building smart systems and simple, intuitive experiences. If you're someone who gets excited about early-stage energy, designing better ways to work, and fixing what's broken in healthcare, we'd love to connect.
About the Role
Basata is looking for a Chief of Staff to serve as a critical strategic partner and right-hand operator to our Founder & CEO. This is a foundational position meant for a world-class generalist-someone with a powerful analytical baseline who excels at organizational strategy, execution, and operational optimization.
In this role, you will own the continuous corporate planning and performance engine that keeps the executive office operating at maximum velocity. At the same time, you will act as Basata's internal incubator-stepping in to stand up, stabilize, and methodically hand off high-priority strategic initiatives before they hit operational bottlenecks.
What You'll Do
Strategic Planning & Performance Tracking
  • End-to-end strategic planning: Facilitate corporate roadmaps, align foundational leadership goals, and lead structured problem-solving on ambiguous, high-stakes trade-off conversations.
  • Strategic & operational gap analysis: Continuously evaluate scaling bottlenecks across the organization, helping leadership prioritize the highest-leverage issues to tackle and systematically delegating or incubating the rest.
  • Corporate operating rhythm optimization: Design, govern, and iterate on executive meeting cadences, agendas, and communication flows to maximize leadership alignment and velocity.
  • Performance visibility & investor storytelling: Architect executive tracking frameworks and translate complex operational data into clear, compelling narratives and visual materials for leadership and board-level updates. Tell the story of the business to investors.
  • Financial health & CEO proxy support: Deeply engage with core corporate financial metrics, burn/runway modeling, and operational planning tools to understand underlying business health.

High-Priority Project Work (Incubation & Handoff)
Short-to-medium term high-priority strategic initiatives. The CoS identifies key gaps and strategic priorities, and when necessary builds the foundational approaches, sets the team up for success, and hands them off to permanent owners. Examples include:
  • Cross-Functional workflow optimization: Identify systemic workflow gaps across core operational lifecycles, creating crisp processes that accelerate value-delivery across product, sales, and client teams.
  • Organizational governance frameworks: Author and embed company-wide decision-making matrices to increase execution speed, resolve ambiguity, and clarify permanent cross-functional ownership across a scaling team.
What We're Looking For
  • 8-12 years of professional experience spanning management consulting, technology operations, corporate operations, or direct past experience in a Chief of Staff capacity.
  • The "Builder-Operator" DNA: You don't just draft elegant slide decks or theoretical frameworks; you have a proven track record of rolling up your sleeves, writing the documentation, building the initial workflows, and testing the systems yourself.
  • Financial and Systemic Fluency: Highly comfortable evaluating operational data, runway models, and software planning infrastructure to extract actionable business insights.
  • Flawless Handoff Mechanics: A master of organizational "incubation." You possess the unique emotional intelligence and clarity needed to step into chaos, build a foundation, set a team up for success, and systematically pass ownership off to permanent teams.
  • Extreme Focus and Guardrails: High capability to ruthlessly prioritize. You know how to evaluate a list of 20 organizational needs, intentionally say "not right now" to 17 of them, and focus the company's energy on tackling the top 3 flawlessly.
Nice to Have
  • Experience in Health Tech or Digital Health: Prior exposure to the healthcare ecosystem, clinical workflows, or practice management platforms.
  • Early-Stage B2B SaaS Background: Direct experience operating within a venture-backed, fast-moving software environment.

Why Join Basata?
  • Drive real impact. Your work will directly multiply the leverage of the CEO and shape how our entire leadership team executes, helping clinics run more smoothly and ensuring patients get the care they need-faster and with fewer headaches.
  • Shape something meaningful. From early operational frameworks to macro-level corporate strategy, you'll play a defining role in constructing both Basata's scaling infrastructure and organizational culture.
  • High ownership. Join a team where you're trusted to lead, build, think critically, and bring ambitious ideas to life.
  • Work with purpose. We're not here to throw more tech at the wall; we're solving real, structural friction in healthcare with tools that providers and patients rely on every day.
Our Core Values
  • Find a way: We own outcomes-no excuses, no shortcuts. When obstacles appear, we remove them. When the path isn't clear, we forge one. We take extreme ownership, stay scrappy, and do what it takes to get the job done. Whatever the challenge, we find a way.
  • Dream big: We refuse to accept that healthcare has to be broken. We dream boldly and act deliberately to build a future where healthcare organizations are free to focus on what truly matters: caring for people. We challenge what's possible, rethinking every mundane barrier standing in the way of better care.
  • Obsess over the customer: We put our customers at the center of everything we do. We anticipate their needs, solve their problems, and design experiences that make them say, "Wow, I love this." Every decision starts with empathy: How will this help them? How will they use it?
  • Always be learning: We're relentless about growth-our own and each other's. We challenge each other to level up, not just in skill, but in mindset, awareness, and character. We attract and empower "A" players, raise the bar, and multiply the impact of those around us.
  • Move Fast. Deliver Excellence: We prioritize rapid execution without sacrificing quality. Speed unlocks momentum-but only when paired with precision. We test relentlessly, ship often, and iterate fast to drive the results we want. Velocity is our competitive edge-excellence is our standard.
