Ruby on Rails is a server-side framework for developing websites, databases, and web services. "Rails" is the name of the overall development framework. As a Ruby Rails developer, you write code for server-side applications in a language called Ruby. After programming your solutions, your responsibilities focus on testing your work and performing debugging duties if necessary. You may also check and improve existing applications. You usually work as part of a development team, and you help integrate other elements, such as database functions, into the framework. Employers may expect you to work with front-end development languages such as HTML and JavaScript.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Ruby Rails Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Ruby Rails Developer, you need expertise in Ruby programming, a solid understanding of the Rails framework, and experience with web development fundamentals such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Familiarity with tools like Git, databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL), and cloud platforms, along with knowledge of testing frameworks and continuous integration systems, is typically expected. Problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and strong communication skills help developers effectively collaborate and deliver robust solutions. These skills ensure high-quality, maintainable code and enable efficient teamwork in fast-paced development environments.

Collaboration usually involves regular code reviews, shared documentation, and effective use of version control systems like Git. Communication tools such as Slack and project management platforms like Jira help keep both teams aligned on project goals, feature requirements, and timelines. This teamwork ensures that back-end APIs and front-end components are well-coordinated, leading to a smooth development process and high-quality end product.

Job description

About the role

We are looking for a Senior Full-Stack Software Engineer to join our Disputes Intake Engineering team and help build the next generation of experiences that support members and the agents who help them recover funds. As a senior engineer, you will be hands-on across the stack while also helping shape architecture, technical direction, and execution for mission-critical tools used across member-facing and internal workflows.

This is a high-leverage area where the team is evolving disputes intake from static, one-size-fits-all flows into more intelligent, adaptive experiences that improve claim quality, reduce unnecessary friction, and let people focus on judgment where it matters most. Working closely with product, design, operations, and partner engineering teams, you'll influence how we build clearer, more scalable, and more trustworthy dispute experiences for our members.

The base salary offered for this role and level of experience will begin at $164,000 and up to $227,000.. Full-time employees are also eligible for a bonus, competitive equity package, and benefits. The actual base salary offered may be higher, depending on your location, skills, qualifications, and experience.

In this role, you can expect to
  • Lead the design and delivery of high-impact full-stack projects across member-facing and internal disputes intake experiences.
  • Build and evolve frontend applications, backend services, and APIs that support dispute filing and the tools our teams use every day.
  • Partner closely with product managers, designers, operations teams, and engineers across Chime to define requirements, shape roadmaps, and deliver scalable solutions.
  • Drive thoughtful system design and improve reliability, performance, and observability across the platform.
  • Help modernize intake experiences by reducing manual work, improving data quality, and enabling smarter, more context-aware workflows.
  • Mentor engineers, share knowledge, and raise the bar on code quality, engineering practices, and technical craftsmanship.
  • Lead projects end to end, from technical design through rollout, iteration, and ongoing support.
To thrive in this role, you have
  • 5+ years of experience developing software in a production environment at scale.
  • Strong full-stack experience building user-facing applications and backend services, with the flexibility to move between frontend and backend work as needed.
  • Proven experience with Ruby on Rails or comparable full-stack frameworks, and experience with modern frontend technologies such as React and TypeScript or similar tools.
  • Deep understanding of architectural patterns for large-scale web applications, including maintainability, performance, and reliability.
  • Ability to lead complex projects, influence technical direction, and collaborate effectively with cross-functional partners.
  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative, low-ego working style.
  • A commitment to maintainable, well-tested code and a high bar for engineering quality.
  • Nice to have: experience working with AI/ML-powered systems, especially models or workflows that support chat, voice, or other conversational experiences.
  • A curiosity for ambiguous, high-impact problems and a desire to improve both member experience and internal team efficiency through thoughtful product and technical decisions.
  • Desire to drive engineering culture within your immediate team, as well as within the larger organization
