Ruby on Rails is an application framework for web development. Specifically, it focuses on server-side functions and relies on the model-view-controller pattern. Rails is the framework itself, while Ruby is the programming language in which Rails is written. Ruby on Rails was designed to cut down on repetitive tasks and to be easy to learn with large, easily accessible libraries. It is open source as well, which means there is a large community that you can utilize to answer questions or improve your skills.

What is a Ruby on Rails developer?

Ruby on Rails developers are software engineers who specialize in building web applications using the Ruby on Rails framework. They use the Ruby programming language and the Rails framework to create scalable, maintainable, and efficient websites or web applications. Their responsibilities often include designing database structures, writing server-side logic, integrating front-end components, and deploying applications. Ruby on Rails developers work in a variety of industries and are valued for their ability to quickly develop robust web solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Ruby on Rails developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Ruby on Rails Developer, a solid grasp of Ruby programming, Rails framework, object-oriented design, and web development fundamentals is essential, often supported by a degree in computer science or related experience. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL, and deployment tools like Heroku or AWS is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help developers collaborate with teams and address client needs efficiently. These skills are crucial for building robust, scalable web applications and adapting to evolving project requirements.

What are some common challenges faced by Ruby on Rails developers when working in agile teams?

Ruby on Rails developers in agile environments often encounter challenges such as rapidly adapting to changing requirements and maintaining code quality during frequent iterations. Collaborating closely with designers, product managers, and QA specialists requires clear communication and flexibility, especially when integrating new features or resolving bugs under tight deadlines. Additionally, balancing the need for quick delivery with best practices like writing tests and refactoring code can be demanding but is critical for long-term project success.

Job description

About PatientIQ

PatientIQ is a fast-growing health tech company on a mission to improve patient outcomes. We partner with healthcare providers, medical device companies, and researchers to collect, analyze, and act on patient-reported outcomes data at scale — powering smarter clinical decisions and accelerating the future of value-based care.

Headquartered in Chicago and backed by top-tier venture capital and major health system investors, PatientIQ is building the largest platform for healthcare providers, industry partners, and researchers to collaborate on what matters most: helping patients get better.

The Opportunity

We are searching for an Engineering Manager that has experience leading teams working with large production applications. As an Engineering Manager, your leadership will be critical in revamping our existing software experience and helping build our future from the ground up using modern technologies and techniques.

What you will work on:
  • Building features that support customer compliance with emerging regulatory mandates.
  • Optimizing patient compliance - the rate of successful data collection from our customers’ patients.
  • Building benchmarking features that enable customers to identify their strengths and weaknesses in patient care.
  • Enabling effective patient data collection using configurable patient care pathways, HL7, and FHIR.
  • Contributing to a multi-tier data architecture that enables cross-referencing of patient outcomes with comorbidities, medical devices, and other related health factors.
  • Building benchmarking features that enable customers to identify their strengths and weaknesses in patient care.
How we work:
  • We operate in 2-week sprints, within 6-month company planning cycles, and deploy weekly.
  • We use Google Suite, JIRA, Slack, Notion, Claude, Macbook Pros.
  • We use Ruby on Rails, Docker, AWS, Typescript, React, GraphQL, OpenSearch, Datadog.
  • We actively use AI throughout the entire software development lifecycle.
What you'll do:
  • Manage and mentor a team of 4-6 engineers, facilitating their professional development.
  • Be a player-coach - active in coding contributions and technical support.
  • Own team agile rituals such as planning, ticketing, backlog grooming, and retrospectives.
  • Plan, lead, and support new production features and projects - partnering with Product Managers and designers to turn business requirements into sound technical solutions.
  • Proactively collaborate with key internal stakeholders to support production usage of our software by our enterprise customers.
  • Champion software performance, scalability, reliability, and observability.
  • Actively balance new development against technical debt and architectural improvements.
  • Actively lead in the adoption/usage of AI tooling and techniques throughout our software development practices.
  • 8+ years of professional software experience and 3+ years of Ruby-on-Rails experience.
  • 1+ years of experience managing engineers.
  • Comfortable using AI throughout the software development lifecycle.
  • Experience within the healthcare software industry.
  • Comfortable working in a startup environment where you must create clarity out of ambiguity.
Nice to have
  • Experience with React, Typescript, GraphQL.
  • Experience integrating with EHRs, HL7, FHIR, and/or SmartOnFHIR.
  • Experience with medical coding standards - CPT, ICD-10, SNOMED.
  • Experience working on large-scale data-driven products or features - leveraging aggregation, data cleaning, data transformation, data attribution, etc.
  • Mission-driven work. We're solving a hard problem that matters — improving patient outcomes through better data. Every person here is working on something real.
  • True idea meritocracy. Great ideas win, regardless of title. We encourage every team member to challenge the status quo.
  • World-class team. You'll work alongside people who are at the top of their fields in health tech, enterprise software, and clinical science.
  • Fast-growing. We're building the largest platform for healthcare providers and industry to collaborate — and we're just getting started.
  • Great benefits. Top-notch health, dental, and vision. 401(k). Flexible PTO — we trust you to take the time you need. Professional development stipends.
  • Real ownership. This is not a role where you maintain someone else's playbook. You'll build, shape strategy, and see your impact directly.
