Certified Welder / Fabricator (Non-Exempt)

Location: San Diego County
Pay Range: $26-$30 per hour (DOE amp; certification level)

Skyhook Metal Designs dba Skyhook Stairs amp; Rails is a specialty contracting company focused on the design, fabrication, and installation of miscellaneous metals and light structural steel. Our work combines craftsmanship, engineering precision, and attention to detail. We are currently seeking a skilled, safety-focused Certified Welder / Fabricator to support both field and shop operations.

This is a non-exempt, hourly position and not an entry-level role. The ideal candidate is experienced, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in both shop and active job site environments.

Position Summary

The Certified Welder / Fabricator performs welding and fabrication of custom stair, railing, and miscellaneous metal components, primarily in the field and occasionally in the shop. This role requires technical expertise, precision, and strict adherence to safety and quality standards.

Driving is not a required function of this role; however, limited driving of a company vehicle may be permitted if business needs arise and only if the employee meets company driving eligibility requirements.

General Qualifications
  • Current AWS or equivalent welding certification required
  • Minimum 3 years of fabrication and welding experience in architectural or structural metalwork
  • Strong attention to detail and pride in craftsmanship
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Valid California driver’s license
  • Driving a company vehicle may be required for this role; must successfully pass a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check and meet company insurance requirements
  • Ability to lift, carry, and move materials up to 75 lbs, with or without reasonable accommodation
Job Responsibilities
  • Perform welding primarily on carbon steel, with occasional stainless steel and aluminum
  • Field-fit, fabricate, and assemble metal components to tight tolerances
  • Execute shop and field welds in accordance with AWS D1.1/D1.2 standards
  • Read and interpret fabrication drawings and project specifications
  • Grind, polish, and finish architectural metalwork
  • Maintain welding equipment and tools in a safe, clean, and organized manner
  • Follow all OSHA and company safety policies and procedures
  • Represent the company professionally on job sites and when working with team members
Compensation amp; Employment Status
  • Hourly, non-exempt position
  • Competitive pay based on experience and certification ($26–$30/hour)
  • Overtime paid in accordance with California law, including daily and weekly overtime
  • Eligible for company benefits, including health, dental, and vision coverage
  • Eligible to participate in the Company’s SIMPLE IRA retirement plan with up to a 3% employer match
  • All benefits available following completion of a 90-day introductory period
