Ruby On Rails Contract information

What is a Ruby on Rails contract developer?

A Ruby on Rails contract developer is a software engineer who is hired on a temporary or project basis to build, maintain, or enhance web applications using the Ruby on Rails framework. They typically work as independent contractors or through consulting agencies, rather than as full-time employees. Their responsibilities often include writing clean code, testing features, fixing bugs, and collaborating with other team members to deliver high-quality software solutions. Contract positions can range from short-term projects to ongoing support roles, offering flexibility for both the developer and the hiring company.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Ruby on Rails contractor?

To thrive as a Ruby on Rails Contractor, you need strong proficiency in Ruby, Rails framework, web development fundamentals, and experience with relational databases, typically demonstrated through a portfolio or relevant work history. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, cloud platforms (e.g., AWS or Heroku), and testing frameworks such as RSpec is often required. Excellent problem-solving skills, effective communication, and the ability to work independently are standout soft skills for this role. These skills and qualities are crucial to deliver high-quality, scalable solutions on time while collaborating remotely with clients or teams.

What are some common challenges faced by Ruby on Rails contractors when joining new projects, and how can they be addressed?

Ruby on Rails contractors often face the challenge of quickly ramping up on existing codebases, which may have varying coding standards or lack comprehensive documentation. To address this, it's helpful to allocate initial time for codebase exploration and to communicate proactively with the team about architectural decisions and project expectations. Collaborating closely with in-house developers and participating in regular stand-ups or code reviews can also smooth the transition and ensure alignment with project goals.

As a product-led company, Mav (the product) is at the core of everything we do. Our product team is growing, and we're looking for a Senior Product Engineer with a growth mindset - someone who loves to learn, thrives on solving hard problems, and wants a large scope of ownership within our fast-growing company. You'll work primarily in Ruby on Rails, building and scaling the dashboard and CRM experiences our customers rely on, while also contributing to the Python services that power Mav's AI-driven messaging and autonomous agent workflows. The features you build will have a direct impact on our customers and our company. You'll report directly to the Head of Engineering and work closely with company leadership, including the CEO, CGO, and Head of Product. You'll join product planning early, contribute to architecture decisions, and help ensure our systems stay scalable, maintainable, secure, and reliable as we grow.

This is a co-located position at our headquarters in the Arts District, Las Vegas, NV. Paid relocation is available for the right candidate.

Responsibilities
  • Join product planning meetings to define, scope, and prioritize new features.
  • Design, build, and maintain reliable, reusable Ruby on Rails applications across the full stack: database, backend logic, and Hotwire (Turbo + Stimulus) frontend.
  • Contribute to Python services that power AI-driven messaging, real-time voice, and autonomous agent workflows.
  • Integrate with internal and external APIs and service interfaces.
  • Build and maintain Sidekiq background jobs for asynchronous workflows.
  • Optimize and scale MongoDB queries, with attention to schema design and indexing.
  • Ensure automated test coverage (RSpec, Capybara) and adherence to security best practices.
  • Deploy, monitor, and maintain applications on Heroku.
Qualifications
  • 8+ years building production applications, with primary depth in Ruby on Rails (MVC architecture, RESTful APIs).
  • Working proficiency in Python, ideally applied to AI/LLM product features.
  • Experience with AI/LLM integrations in a product setting.
  • Proficiency with MongoDB (schema design, performance optimization, indexing strategies).
  • Experience implementing frontend features with Hotwire (Turbo + Stimulus).
  • Experience with unit, integration, and E2E testing using RSpec and Capybara.
  • Familiarity with Sidekiq background job processing.
  • Experience deploying and scaling on Heroku.
  • Solid understanding of object-oriented design and security best practices for web applications.
Bonus
  • Experience with autonomous agent workflows or real-time voice systems (e.g., LiveKit).
  • Familiarity with Python frameworks such as FastAPI and async/concurrency tools (asyncio, Celery).
  • Experience with event-driven or streaming infrastructure (RabbitMQ, Kafka, Redis Streams).
  • Experience designing CRM or dashboard-style applications.
  • Knowledge of compliance requirements in financial or insurance applications.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines or contributions to open-source Ruby projects.
What's In It for You
  • Fast, exciting start-up environment
  • Meaningful equity
