Job description

Waste Connections is seeking a Product Manager to own the end-to-end product vision, roadmap, and success criteria for SMART, our AI-powered route optimization and scheduling platform. In this role you will drive alignment between district operations and centralized business and technical teams to ensure consistent execution as SMART moves through pilot, scale, and maintain stages. The ideal candidate translates complex operational and routing logic into clear requirements and is comfortable driving decisions across both business and technical stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
  • Own the SMART roadmap and backlog, including route sequencing and scheduling optimization.

  • Prioritize features across the pilot, scale, and maintain stages of product builds.

  • Translate district rules and legacy routing logic into clear, actionable product requirements.

  • Author clear requirements, user stories, and acceptance criteria for the development team.

  • Monitor SMART performance and drive post-release improvements.

  • Partner with platform and data science teams on data and algorithm needs.

  • Drive district adoption through training, enablement, and change management as SMART scales.

  • Communicate roadmap progress, dependencies, and business impact to executive sponsors and working teams.

  • Identify opportunities to strengthen the SMART portfolio and surface new opportunity areas.

Qualifications
  • 5+ years of product or program management experience, including AI/analytics or operational technology products.

  • Experience across all stages of the product lifecycle, from concept through scale and ongoing support.

  • Familiarity with vehicle routing solutions.

  • Business acumen to quantify the value of vehicle route optimization.

  • Strong analytical mindset for navigating business and technical trade-off discussions.

  • Cloud and data platform fluency (AWS, Databricks, or comparable technologies).

  • Experience with Agile delivery and backlog management tools (e.g., Jira, Azure DevOps).

  • Assertive presence and the ability to drive alignment across cross-functional teams.

  • PMP, CSPO, SAFe, or Pragmatic certification a plus.

Measures of Success
  • SMART roadmap delivered on time and against strategic OKRs.

  • SMART adoption success rate at scale across districts.

  • Route acceptance rate across districts (share of SMART-optimized routes run as planned).

  • Planned versus actual cost savings per district from SMART enablement.

  • New SMART capabilities identified and advanced from opportunity to roadmap.

Successful candidates will demonstrate the ability to deliver measurable business outcomes while collaborating effectively across operational, business, and technical teams.
Waste Connections is an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to disability or protected veteran status.
