Job Title: Driver Helper

Job Summary
The Driver Helper works alongside the Route Driver to assist in the safe and efficient collection of waste and/or recyclable materials. This position requires strong physical stamina, attention to safety protocols, and the ability to perform essential labor tasks in varying outdoor conditions.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

To perform this role successfully, an individual must be able to complete each duty satisfactorily. Other tasks may be assigned as needed.

  • Work in compliance with Waste Management Safety Rules, OSHA standards, and all local, state, and federal regulations.

  • Immediately report unsafe conditions, service issues, or incidents to the Route Manager or Dispatch.

  • Attend all required safety training sessions, meetings, and briefings.

  • Load and empty residential and/or commercial containers into the truck manually or with mechanical assistance.

  • Handle containers that may be staged curbside, dockside, or require pullout for servicing.

  • Operate hoisting devices to lift and dump bins or containers into the truck hopper.

  • Assist the driver during all backing maneuvers to ensure safety.

  • Communicate customer requests to Dispatch or Route Manager.

  • Notify Route Manager or Dispatch of service interruptions, such as impassable streets, inaccessible receptacles, or safety hazards.

  • Support other drivers or routes as directed to meet customer needs.


Qualifications

Required:

  • Less than 1 year of related experience.

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

  • Legal authorization to work in the United States.

  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen, physical exam, background check, and employment verification.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.

Preferred:

  • Willingness and ability to pursue a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).


Work Environment & Physical Demands

Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities.

  • Frequent use of motor coordination requiring arm, hand, finger, and leg dexterity.

  • Regular physical effort handling items over 25 lbs, with occasional lifting up to 70 lbs.

  • Frequent pushing, pulling, bending, twisting, and climbing.

  • Work performed outdoors and/or riding in a GPS/video-monitored vehicle.

  • Exposure to dirt, odors, noise, weather extremes, and other environmental factors throughout the workday.

  • Ability to lift up to 75 lbs and move on your feet for extended periods.
  • Enjoys working outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Team player with a strong work ethic and positive attitude.
  • Prior experience in general labor, warehouse, construction, or landscaping is a plus-but not required.
  • Must pass a background check and drug screening.
