Job description

ON.energy is building the power infrastructure that makes the AI era possible. As AI demand surges past what the grid and traditional data centers can support, ON.energy provides a new class of power technology proven at gigawatt scale and trusted by the world’s leading cloud and AI companies. Our systems are already deployed across 2.5 GW of hyper-scale campuses, validated by top U.S. national labs, and certified for grid-safe operation by major utilities. With real products in the field, we’re scaling faster than the grid can, transforming power from a bottleneck into a competitive advantage for the companies building the future.

OVERVIEW OF THE POSITION

The Director of Logistics provides strategic leadership for the end-to-end logistics function across all ON projects. Reporting to the VP of Supply Chain, this role owns the logistics operating model — from freight strategy and carrier relationships to customs compliance, cost performance, and team development. The Director translates project delivery requirements into scalable logistics capabilities and partners directly with executive leadership on risk, capital spend, and organizational growth.

The ideal candidate brings deep domain expertise in heavy industrial or engineered-to-order energy equipment logistics, combined with the leadership maturity to build and lead a high-performing function.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Logistics Strategy & Operating Model

  • Define and own the logistics strategy for all project types, including domestic and international freight, import/export compliance, and last-mile delivery to customer sites.
  • Establish standard operating procedures, tools, templates, and KPIs for the logistics function.
  • Build and continuously improve the department's capabilities to support business growth, new project types, and expanded geographies.
  • Partner with Project Management, Master Scheduling, and Procurement leadership to align logistics execution with project milestones and commissioning timelines.
  • Provide logistics input during project planning phases, including freight cost modeling, lead time analysis, and risk identification.
  • Own escalation and recovery planning for logistics disruptions that threaten project schedules or cost targets.
  • Support customer site delivery planning for complex, staged, or access-constrained installations.
  • Provide executive reporting on logistics performance, risk landscape, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Own strategic relationships with key freight forwarders, 3PLs, heavy haul carriers, customs brokers, and port agents.

Team Leadership & Development

  • Directly manage and develop a team of Logistics Coordinators, providing coaching, performance management, and career development.
  • Define team structure, headcount requirements, and role responsibilities as the function scales.
  • Foster a high-performance culture grounded in accountability, proactive communication, and operational excellence.
  • Serve as the senior escalation point for complex or high-stakes logistics issues.

Compliance, Risk & Documentation

  • Ensure full compliance with U.S. customs regulations, export control requirements (EAR/ITAR where applicable), and international trade laws.
  • Oversee accuracy and completeness of all trade documentation: commercial invoices, BOLs, certificates of conformity, HTS classifications, ISF filings.
  • Manage freight claims, damage resolution, and carrier corrective action processes.
  • Maintain audit-ready documentation standards for Finance, PMO, and regulatory review.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

  • 8–15 years in logistics, supply chain, or freight management, with at least 3 years in a leadership or management role.
  • Demonstrated experience managing logistics for engineered-to-order, heavy industrial, or electrical equipment (e.g., transformers, switchgear, industrial skids, BESS components, or similar project cargo).
  • Deep knowledge of domestic and international freight modes: LTL, FTL, flatbed, heavy haul, ocean FCL/LCL, air freight, drayage, and final-mile.
  • Strong working knowledge of U.S. import/export compliance: HTS classification, ISF, customs entry, Incoterms, and trade documentation.
  • Experience negotiating and managing freight forwarder, 3PL, and carrier contracts and SLAs.
  • Proficiency with logistics tools and reporting platforms (Smartsheet, Power BI, ERP/SCM modules, TMS systems).
