Job description

Position: Wellness Department Manager

Status: Full-time – 40 hours/week, non-exempt

Salary: Management-level position starting at $20.07/hour based on experience

Reports to: General Manager; supervises wellness department staff; acts as manager-on-duty as needed

Overview: To oversee the selection, pricing, and promotion of wellness products (vitamins, supplements, personal care, bulk herbs, mercantile) to meet store objectives for sales, margin, and shopper services


Primary Responsibilities:

I. Purchasing

  • Arrange volume deals, promotions, and “everyday low price” deals with suppliers
  • Assign responsibilities to department buyers and supervise them in selecting and purchasing products with favorable prices, terms, quality, and delivery
  • Set sales, margin, and inventory turn goals for the department
  • Review weekly, monthly, and quarterly reports with department buyers
  • Purchase regularly for specific sub-department(s) or assign replacement ordering duties to other staff as needed
  • Receive orders or ensure proper receiving by other staff in accordance with established procedures
  • Coordinate returns and credit from suppliers where applicable
  • Evaluate suppliers, investigate new sources of supply, or direct department buyers in doing this, and approve changes within co-op product policy
  • Arrange for cross-training to ensure adequate backup for departmental buying for each product line
  • Coordinate periodic price surveys of identified competitors
  • Set pricing guidelines for department buyers

II. Merchandising

  • Plan attractive displays for wellness sub-departments
  • Ensure departments are fully stocked and rotated
  • Ensure prompt, friendly, courteous customer service in departments and ensure accurate information is given to customers, observing legal constraints
  • Participate in regular marketing team meetings to plan promotions and storewide merchandising
  • Coordinate promotions in wellness sub-departments:
  • Ensure adequate and timely supply of promoted products
  • Coordinate signage, flyers, window displays, and point-of-sale information with marketing
  • Arrange for case stacks and end-aisle displays with department staff
  • Coordinate in-store product demonstrations with marketing
  • Work with newsletter editor to provide product information, recipes, seasonal reports (crops, prices, politics)
  • Attend trade shows/conferences and/or designate department buyers to attend
  • Participate in planning store layout and product locations for shopping and stocking efficiency

III. Department Maintenance

  • Keep accurate shrink records and ensure that unsellable items are returned or properly disposed of
  • Ensure adequate department shelves, displays, aisles, and storage areas are in clean, orderly condition, meeting health department standards
  • Supervise and participate in inventory counts
  • Ensure maintenance of department equipment and advise management of equipment issues or needs

IV. Department Personnel

  • Hire qualified applicants following established policy
  • Ensure on-the-job training
  • Conduct performance evaluations
  • Recommend pay increases within department budget
  • Take disciplinary action as needed, following established policy
  • Schedule hours for department within payroll allocation and review timecards
  • Organize departmental staff meetings

V. Other Duties

  • Attend management team meetings
  • Review reports of departmental performance (sales, margin, turns) and take corrective action with department buyers as needed
  • Participate in development of operating and capital budgets
  • Perform other tasks assigned by executive management
  • Attend storewide meetings


Skills & Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with vitamins, supplements, natural beauty aids
  • Knowledge of trends in natural foods industry
  • Understanding of legal requirements affecting sale of vitamins, supplements, herbs
  • Supervisory experience—hiring, training, evaluating, directing
  • Communication skills—good listener, clear instructions
  • Demonstrated ability to follow through on commitments
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple demands
