As of Sep 4, 2026, the average hourly pay for root cause analysis engineer in Brighton, MA is $61.02, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $43.75 and $81.20 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What does a root cause analysis engineer do?

A Root Cause Analysis (RCA) Engineer specializes in investigating problems, failures, or defects in products, systems, or processes to identify their underlying causes. By using structured methodologies and analytical tools, they determine why issues occurred and recommend corrective actions to prevent recurrence. Their work often involves collaborating with cross-functional teams, collecting and analyzing data, and documenting findings to improve overall quality and reliability. Root Cause Analysis Engineers play a crucial role in industries such as manufacturing, engineering, and IT, ensuring continuous improvement and operational excellence.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a root cause analysis engineer?

To thrive as a Root Cause Analysis Engineer, you need strong analytical skills, a solid engineering background, and experience with problem-solving methodologies like Six Sigma or 8D. Familiarity with technical tools such as statistical analysis software, failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA), and quality management systems is typically required, along with relevant certifications like Six Sigma Green or Black Belt. Effective communication, attention to detail, and cross-functional collaboration are vital soft skills for conveying findings and driving corrective actions. These abilities ensure accurate diagnosis of issues, effective implementation of solutions, and prevention of recurring problems in complex systems.

What are some common challenges faced by root cause analysis engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Root Cause Analysis Engineers often encounter challenges such as incomplete data, time constraints for investigations, and coordinating input from multiple departments. Addressing these issues requires strong communication skills, a systematic approach to data collection, and the ability to facilitate cross-functional meetings. Building strong relationships with stakeholders and using established RCA tools (like 5 Whys or Fishbone diagrams) can help streamline the process and lead to more accurate, actionable conclusions.

What is the difference between Root Cause Analysis Engineer vs Quality Engineer?

AspectRoot Cause Analysis EngineerQuality Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering, certifications like Six Sigma or RCA toolsBachelor's in Engineering or Quality Management, certifications like ASQ CQE or Six Sigma
Work EnvironmentManufacturing, industrial, or process improvement settingsManufacturing, service, or product development environments
Industry UsageFocuses on identifying underlying causes of failures or defectsFocuses on ensuring product/service quality and compliance

While both roles aim to improve processes, the Root Cause Analysis Engineer specializes in diagnosing fundamental issues causing failures, whereas the Quality Engineer concentrates on maintaining overall product quality and compliance. The roles often overlap but differ in primary focus and scope.

Key responsibilities

  • Own Teragen's reliability knowledge base by connecting failure data across cells, fabrication, testing, and stacks.

  • Lead root-cause investigations using microscopy, fractography, cross-sectioning, FMEA, and structured failure analysis.

  • Develop statistical reliability models and lifetime predictions to guide product durability and reliability improvements.

Job description

About Teragen Energy

Teragen Energy Corporation ("Teragen Energy") is revolutionizing how AI data centers and broader industries get powered, by building the next generation solid oxide fuel cell platform. Rooted in the technology developed at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and validated by ARPA-E, our mission is to deliver affordable, reliable, clean fuel cell power where it is needed the most to enable power security and flexibility for customers. Founded by technologists, scientists, and energy project developers, we are a fast-paced deep-tech company moving from lab-scale prototypes towards commercial module design - ideal stage for your work to directly shape how power is generated in 21st century, towards terawatt-hour scale.

This Role

We are hiring a Reliability & Failure Analysis Engineer to understand why things fail, how they fail, and, most importantly, how to make sure they never fail that way again. Your work will connect information across cells, manufacturing, testing, and stack development to build the reliability models and engineering knowledge that move Teragen from successful prototypes to dependable commercial products. AI data centers and critical infrastructure need 99.999% reliable power - this role ensure we deliver that reliability.

What Youโ€™ll Do
  • Own Teragen's reliability knowledge base, connecting failures across cells, fabrication, testing, and stacks into a living database that guides engineering decisions.
  • Lead deep root-cause investigations using microscopy, fractography, cross-sectioning, FMEA, and structured failure analysis whenever failures extend beyond a single discipline.
  • Develop statistical reliability models and lifetime predictions from laboratory and manufacturing data to guide durability milestones and product decisions.
  • Identify recurring failure mechanisms and work with engineering teams to eliminate them through design, material, or process improvements.
  • Help define reliability testing, data collection, and failure documentation standards as the company scales.
How We Work

Decisions here are driven by data, not seniority or consensus. We run minimal process and maximum communication. You will be trusted to work autonomously while keeping your work visible, documented, and impactful to the team.

What Weโ€™re Looking For
  • BS or MS degree with 3-6+ years of experience in failure analysis, reliability engineering, or a related field; ceramics, electrochemical, or high-temperature materials experience is a strong plus; exceptional candidates at any level are encouraged to apply..
  • Strong grounding in test design and data analysis, including comfort defining what data is needed to resolve a technical question.
  • Experience with root-cause methodologies and reliability statistics (e.g., Weibull analysis, MTBF/MTTF modeling).
  • Comfort synthesizing across multiple data sources and disciplines rather than owning a single workstream.
  • Rigorous documentation habits a must. This role's value compounds only if findings are captured and reusable.
  • Experience with microscopy and materials characterization (SEM, optical microscopy or other image analysis, ICP, XRD or related techniques) is a plus.

Every failure at Teragen is a chance to learn something durable - literally. If you want to be the person who turns scattered failures into the reliability data that gets us to pilot, this is that role.

Compensation Package
  • Base Salary
  • Competitive Employee Equity Grant
  • 100% coverage for healthcare insurance for employees
  • Unlimited time off program
  • Eligibility for 401(k) plan
Teragen Core Values
  • Openness and Boldness - Everyone on our team brings something special, including you. Communicate and collaborate openly, exchanging your best ideas with those around you.
  • Be Innovative - Innovation is the execution of creativity. Pursue new ideas with rigor and speed.
  • Plan, Execute, Deliver - Everything we do should have a purpose. Plan for the outcome we want, execute towards it relentlessly, and deliver what we said we would.

Teragen Energy Corporation is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees. We do not discriminate based on race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, age, or veteran status. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to these or any other characteristics protected by law.
