Job description

Position Purpose

This position assists with the perioperative care in a technical support staff function.

Nature and Scope

This position serves a patient population of Neonatal, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult, and Geriatric.

This position works with and adapts to the different needs and requests of the management staff, circulating nurse, anesthesiologists, and surgeons.

This position assists the surgical team in the set-up and breakdown of equipment required before, during, and after each procedure, and reports any equipment malfunctions to the circulating nurse or Surgical Supervisor. This position sets up (but does not operate) the following equipment: anesthesia machine, monitoring equipment, Bovie machine, suctions, craniotomy table, ortho tables, microscopes, tanks, and operating lights, and other related equipment. This position may be trained in operating surgical lasers under the supervision of the laser safety officer or laser liaison. The incumbent will assist in room turnover process by removing used supplies, cleaning surfaces, checking/replacing sharps containers, discarding trash, and restocking of supplies. Accurately displays knowledge of traffic control patterns, aseptic technique, and assists in creating/maintaining a sterile field. Will assist with proper patient positioning, following direction accurately. The incumbent will assist in the transporting of patients to and from the surgical suite using appropriate precautions for patient safety. Regularly takes initiative to clean and appropriately restock ORs and sub sterile areas. Will assist in the transport of non-controlled drugs, specimens and blood products in a timely manner. Consistently demonstrates a working knowledge of standard precautions to include protective devices. The incumbent accurately performs initial troubleshooting of dysfunctional equipment and exchange equipment whenever necessary. Properly labels and reports broken equipment to the appropriate person for repair.

At South Meadows location only, for departments 400201 and 400340, the incumbent will assist with proper surgical scrub and basic understanding of holding retractors during orthopedic surgeries and will be done when under the direct supervision of the surgical tech and surgeon only.

It is common to encounter potential hazards in the healthcare environment. Some of these hazards could include, but are not limited to radiation, toxic chemicals, biological hazards, heat, noise, dust and stress. Renown Health has a Safety Management Program in place that addresses these issues.

Other related duties, flexible hours, and overtime may be required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  1. Demonstrates behavior consistent with the RENOWN HEALTH Standards of Conduct.
  2. Basic hand-eye coordination.
  3. Skills for function as a member of the surgical team and perform duties learned through an orientation.
  4. Functional knowledge of anatomy, surgical procedures, and equipment.
  5. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care, based on physical, motor/sensory, psychosocial, and safety appropriate to the age of the patients served.
