Common Search/ComparisonYesNo

Robotics Software Developers focus on programming and developing software for robotic systems, while Mechatronics Engineers work on designing and integrating mechanical, electronic, and software components. Both roles often collaborate but differ mainly in their core responsibilities and skill sets.

What are some common challenges faced by Robotics Software Developers in integrating hardware and software components?

Robotics Software Developers often encounter challenges related to ensuring seamless communication between software algorithms and diverse hardware components like sensors, actuators, and controllers. Differences in hardware specifications, real-time constraints, and debugging low-level hardware interactions can add complexity to development. Collaborating closely with hardware engineers is essential to address issues quickly and optimize system performance. Staying up to date with new frameworks and tools, such as ROS (Robot Operating System), also helps streamline integration and testing.

What engineers make $500,000?

Senior engineers in specialized fields such as software engineering, petroleum engineering, and aerospace engineering can earn $500,000 or more annually, especially with extensive experience, advanced skills, and in high-demand industries. Executive-level engineering roles or those with significant leadership responsibilities may also reach this compensation level.

What does a Robotics Software Developer do?

A Robotics Software Developer designs, develops, and maintains the software that controls robotic systems. They write code that enables robots to sense their environment, make decisions, and perform tasks autonomously or semi-autonomously. These developers often work with embedded systems, artificial intelligence, and machine learning to improve robot performance. Their work is essential for applications ranging from manufacturing automation to healthcare and service robots.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Robotics Software Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Robotics Software Developer, you need strong programming skills in languages such as C++, Python, or ROS, along with a background in computer science, engineering, or robotics. Familiarity with robotics simulation platforms (e.g., Gazebo), version control systems (e.g., Git), and experience with sensor integration and real-time operating systems are typically required. Problem-solving, teamwork, and effective communication are essential soft skills to excel in multidisciplinary environments. These abilities ensure reliable development, integration, and deployment of robotic systems that meet both technical and user requirements.

What engineers make $300,000 a year?

Senior robotics software developers with extensive experience, specialized skills in AI, machine learning, and real-time systems, and often working in high-demand industries or companies can earn $300,000 or more annually. Achieving this level typically requires advanced degrees, certifications, and a strong track record of project success.

How much do robotic programmers make?

Robotic programmers, or robotics software developers, typically earn a median annual salary of around $80,000 to $120,000, depending on experience, location, and industry. Skilled programmers with expertise in programming languages like C++ and Python, as well as knowledge of robotic systems and tools, tend to earn higher salaries.

Can a software engineer work in robotics?

Yes, a software engineer can work in robotics by developing control algorithms, embedded systems, and software for robotic hardware. Skills in programming languages like C++ and Python, as well as knowledge of robotics frameworks such as ROS, are often required. Many robotics roles also require understanding of sensors, actuators, and real-time systems.

Job description

Founded in 2015, Shield AI is a venture-backed defense-tech company with the mission of protecting service members and civilians with intelligent systems. Its products include Hivemind autonomy software and V-BAT and X-BAT aircraft. With offices and facilities across the U.S., Europe, the Middle East, and Asia-Pacific, Shield AI's technology actively supports operations worldwide. For more information, visit www.shield.ai. Follow Shield AI on LinkedIn, X, Instagram, and YouTube.ย

The Hivemind Platform Team at Shield AI is seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Requirements Engineer to join our team.ย

The Hivemind Enterprise product is a software development kit (SDK) that enables scalable design, deployment, evaluation, and iteration of autonomy architectures for a wide range of robotic platforms. Hivemind Enterprise is a highly technical software product providing tools and user interfaces to support multiple user personae, ranging from AI developers to test engineers. ย

As a Requirements Engineer for Hivemind at Shield AI, you will be a key member of a multidisciplinary systems engineering team, working collaboratively with Product, technical individual contributors, Test / Quality Assurance team members, and systems modelers to translate product user stories into clear engineering requirements with testable metrics.ย

This role involves defining, modeling, and validating the Hivemind software system and its applications. It is hands-on and highly collaborative, requiring expertise in requirements formulation, traceability, management, systems modeling, and knowledge of autonomous software pipelines. While the primary focus is requirements development, this role also supports system model development as part of a broader systems engineering function and requires close collaboration with systems modelers to ensure consistency between requirements, system architecture, and system behavior across the Hivemind SDK.ย

WHAT YOU'LL DO:
Requirements development: Work cross-functionally with Product Managers, technical individual contributors, and Quality Assurance team members to translate high-level customer feature requests into clear, detailed technical requirements aligned with product vision and roadmap. Ensure requirements are actionable by engineering teams and testable through defined metrics and acceptance criteria.ย

Requirements analysis: Identify dependencies, constraints, edge cases, and risks within proposed product or technical requirements. Ensure all requirements are feasible, testable, and aligned with business objectives and technical constraints.ย
ย
Documentation and modeling: Author clear and well-structured documentation, including acceptance criteria, traceability links, and system models. Use requirement management tools to maintain clarity, consistency, and traceability.ย
ย
Validation and verification: Collaborate with the Quality Assurance, Test, and development teams to validate that requirements are implemented correctly. Support test case development and define strategies for requirement traceability and verification coverage, ensuring that an implementation satisfies requirements.ย

Requirements management: Track and manage requirements throughout the development lifecycle. Maintain version control, document requirement changes, and assess the impact of updates to ensure consistent alignment with the product's technical and functional intent.ย

Cross-functional alignment: Serve as the point of integration between customer intent and engineering execution. Facilitate communication across disciplines to reduce ambiguity, align expectations, and ensure clarity throughout design, development, and delivery. Participate in reviews and walkthroughs to confirm stakeholder alignment.ย
ย
Systems modeling support: Collaborate with systems modelers to contribute to the development and maintenance of system models that capture system architecture, behavior, and interfaces. Use models to improve requirement clarity, traceability, and validation, and ensure alignment between requirements and the evolving system design.ย
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree with approximately 7+ years of relevant experience, or Master's degree with approximately 5+ years of relevant experience, in Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Robotics, Software Engineering, or a closely related technical field with demonstrated experience working on complex software or autonomous systems.ย
