What does a robotics software developer do?

A Robotics Software Developer designs, develops, and maintains the software that controls robotic systems. They write code that enables robots to sense their environment, make decisions, and perform tasks autonomously or semi-autonomously. These developers often work with embedded systems, artificial intelligence, and machine learning to improve robot performance. Their work is essential for applications ranging from manufacturing automation to healthcare and service robots.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a robotics software developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Robotics Software Developer, you need strong programming skills in languages such as C++, Python, or ROS, along with a background in computer science, engineering, or robotics. Familiarity with robotics simulation platforms (e.g., Gazebo), version control systems (e.g., Git), and experience with sensor integration and real-time operating systems are typically required. Problem-solving, teamwork, and effective communication are essential soft skills to excel in multidisciplinary environments. These abilities ensure reliable development, integration, and deployment of robotic systems that meet both technical and user requirements.

What are some common challenges faced by robotics software developers in integrating hardware and software components?

Robotics Software Developers often encounter challenges related to ensuring seamless communication between software algorithms and diverse hardware components like sensors, actuators, and controllers. Differences in hardware specifications, real-time constraints, and debugging low-level hardware interactions can add complexity to development. Collaborating closely with hardware engineers is essential to address issues quickly and optimize system performance. Staying up to date with new frameworks and tools, such as ROS (Robot Operating System), also helps streamline integration and testing.

What is the difference between Robotics Software Developer vs Mechatronics Engineer?

Key responsibilities

  • Design and develop robust, scalable web applications using TypeScript, React, and/or .NET

  • Partner with engineers and architects to design and implement Azure cloud solutions

  • Support what you build in production, including monitoring, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement

Job description

McKesson is an impact-driven, Fortune 10 company that touches virtually every aspect of healthcare. We are known for delivering insights, products, and services that make quality care more accessible and affordable. Here, we focus on the health, happiness, and well-being of you and those we serve – we care.

What you do at McKesson matters. We foster a culture where you can grow, make an impact, and are empowered to bring new ideas. Together, we thrive as we shape the future of health for patients, our communities, and our people. If you want to be part of tomorrow’s health today, we want to hear from you.

The Specialty Access & Affordability value stream is seeking a Senior Full Stack Developer to join the FastAuth team. In this role you will build and scale the applications that move specialty prescriptions through prior authorization faster, reducing the time between a prescription being written and a patient starting therapy.

You will work alongside a collaborative group of skilled engineers who take pride in consistent delivery and technical excellence, spanning React front ends, .NET services, and event-driven integrations running on Azure. This is a hands-on role on a team that ships continuously and owns what it builds.

What You'll Do
  • Design and develop robust, scalable web applications using TypeScript, React, and/or .NET
  • Partner with engineers and architects to design and implement Azure cloud solutions
  • Lead and coach team members through difficult problems
  • Help build and maintain our event-driven architecture
  • Turn complex business requirements into elegant, simple technical solutions
  • Raise the bar on the team through code review, pairing, and mentoring less experienced developers
  • Deliver high-quality work at a predictable cadence and help the team sustain it
  • Support what you build in production, including monitoring, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement
  • Participate in agile ceremonies, technical planning, and design reviews

Priority will be given to candidates who reside in the Columbus, OH metropolitan area.

We are unable to provide sponsorship for this role presently or in the future.

Minimum Requirement

Degree or equivalent experience, plus typically 8+ years of relevant professional experience.

Critical Skills
  • 8+ years building and shipping production software applications
  • Strong proficiency in TypeScript and React, and/or .NET
  • Experience with Azure cloud services and infrastructure
  • Working knowledge of event-driven architecture, ideally including Kafka
  • A track record of using AI tools effectively in your day-to-day development workflow
  • Ability to take a feature from ambiguous requirement to production with limited direction
  • Consistent follow-through on commitments and a bias toward finishing work
  • Collaborative approach to software development and problem solving
  • Comfort working in a fast-moving environment where priorities evolve as the product does
Additional Skills (Preferred)
  • Healthcare applications, particularly EHR integrations
  • RPA technology
  • FHIR standard, SMART on FHIR integrations, and healthcare data exchange
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and automated testing
  • Contributions to open source projects or developer communities
Education

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.

Work Environment

Hybrid, based out of the Columbus, Ohio office. Occasional collaboration across time zones with distributed team members and partners.
