Robotics Simulation information

What is robotics simulation?

Robotics simulation is the use of computer software to model and test the behavior of robots in a virtual environment. This allows engineers and researchers to design, program, and optimize robots without needing physical prototypes, saving time and resources. Simulations can replicate real-world conditions, enabling the analysis of robot movement, sensor data, and task performance before implementation. Robotics simulation is commonly used in developing autonomous systems, industrial automation, and research applications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Robotics Simulation Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Robotics Simulation Engineer, you need a strong background in robotics, computer science, and mathematics, often supported by a relevant degree such as electrical engineering or mechanical engineering. Familiarity with simulation tools like Gazebo, ROS (Robot Operating System), MATLAB/Simulink, and programming languages such as Python or C++ is essential. Problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are key soft skills that help in designing and refining complex simulation models. These abilities are crucial for creating accurate simulations that accelerate development, testing, and deployment of robotic systems.

What is the difference between Robotics Simulation vs Robotics Software Engineer?

Robotics Simulation focuses on creating virtual environments to test and validate robotic systems, while Robotics Software Engineers develop the actual software that controls robots. Both roles often collaborate but serve different stages of robotics development, with simulation emphasizing testing and validation, and software engineering focusing on implementation and coding.

What are some typical challenges faced when working in robotics simulation, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in robotics simulation often encounter challenges such as accurately modeling real-world physics, ensuring simulation fidelity, and integrating with hardware or software systems. Addressing these requires a strong understanding of both robotics and simulation tools, as well as effective collaboration with engineers, software developers, and testers. Staying updated with advancements in simulation platforms and maintaining clear documentation are key strategies to overcome these challenges and ensure the simulations provide meaningful insights for development and testing.

Job description

Opportunity
PeopleTec is currently seeking a Solution Architect - Digital Thread (Integration) to support our Huntsville, AL location.
PeopleTec is hiring an Integration Architect to build the tool proxies and integration layer that connect authoritative engineering tools to the semantic data broker powering our Digital Test Environment's digital thread. This role owns the connectors, direct, mapping, and specified model interfaces that move ontology-aligned linked data between MBSE, CAD/PLM, requirements, simulation, and test tools.
Responsibilities:
  • Design and build tool proxies (direct, mapping, and specified model interfaces) that exchange linked data between authoritative engineering tools and the central triplestore.
  • Integrate MBSE (MagicDraw/Cameo, Rhapsody), requirements (DOORS), CAD/PLM, simulation (MATLAB/Simulink, CFD, FEA, 6DOF), and test automation tools with the semantic data broker.
  • Build and orchestrate IoIF-style workflows (Python, Jupyter) that coordinate co-simulations and propagate results back into the digital thread.
  • Integrate the digital thread with CI/CD pipelines (GitHub/GitLab, Atlassian) and test automation frameworks so that test artifacts and verification evidence flow into the authoritative repository as linked data.
  • Automate generation of engineering artifacts (ICDs, specifications, test procedures, CDRLs) directly from the digital thread.
  • Develop Cameo plugins, DataHub configurations, and validation suites that enforce ontology tagging conventions and MBSE acquisition requirements.
  • Partner with the Ontology Architect to ensure tool data exchanges conform to the ontology and SSVL validation rules.

Qualifications
Required Skills/Experience:
  • 7+ years in systems or software engineering, with demonstrated delivery of MBSE, digital engineering, or tool integration on complex aerospace or defense programs.
  • Hands-on expertise with MagicDraw/Cameo (including DataHub, Cameo Simulation Toolkit, and validation suites), SysML, and Cameo plugin/API development.
  • Programming proficiency in Python (required for IoIF-style workflows); proficiency in at least one of Java, JavaScript, or C++.
  • Experience integrating engineering tools via REST APIs or equivalent (Teamwork Cloud, DOORS, PLM, simulation tools).
  • Working knowledge of Semantic Web Technologies (OWL, RDF, SPARQL, triplestores) sufficient to author queries and consume ontology-aligned data.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines (GitHub/GitLab), the Atlassian tool suite, and DevSecOps practices.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
  • An active DoD Secret clearance is required to perform this work. Candidates are required to have an active Secret clearance upon hire (or the able to obtain), and the ability to maintain this level of clearance during their employment.

Education Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (Systems Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or similar).

Desired Skills:
  • Direct experience with IoIF, DEFII, or comparable semantic data broker implementations.
  • Active U.S. DoD SECRET, TOP SECRET, or TS/SCI clearance.
  • IBM Rational Rhapsody experience; familiarity with UAF, UPDM, or the UML Testing Profile.
  • Test automation experience with Robot Framework or equivalent keyword-driven frameworks.
  • Co-simulation orchestration experience across CAD, CFD, FEA, 6DOF, or MATLAB/Simulink.
  • Familiarity with SysML v2 and its API/services.
  • Familiarity with DoDI 5000.97, the DoD Digital Engineering Strategy, and ITAR/EAR.
  • Track record of measurable cycle-time reductions (>20%) or multi-million-dollar cost savings through digital engineering.
  • Advanced degree in a related STEM field.
