What does a robotics application engineer do?

A Robotics Application Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and implementing robotic systems to automate manufacturing or business processes. They work closely with clients to understand their automation needs, select appropriate hardware and software, and integrate robotics solutions into existing workflows. Their role often includes programming robots, troubleshooting issues, providing technical support, and training end-users. Robotics Application Engineers play a crucial part in improving efficiency, safety, and productivity in industries ranging from automotive to electronics and logistics.

What are some typical challenges a robotics application engineer faces when integrating robots into existing manufacturing processes?

A Robotics Application Engineer often encounters challenges such as ensuring compatibility between new robotic systems and legacy equipment, customizing solutions to meet unique production requirements, and minimizing downtime during installation and testing. Effective communication with cross-functional teams—including production, maintenance, and IT—is vital to address unforeseen technical issues and to ensure seamless integration. Additionally, balancing project timelines with safety and quality standards requires strong project management and problem-solving skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a robotics application engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Robotics Application Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical or electrical engineering, programming (such as Python or C++), and automation principles, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with robotics platforms (like FANUC, ABB, or KUKA), CAD software, and PLC programming, as well as certifications in robotics or automation, are commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and teamwork are crucial soft skills for collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and clients. These skills ensure the successful design, implementation, and support of robotic solutions tailored to complex industrial needs.

What is the difference between Robotics Application Engineer vs Robotics Software Engineer?

AspectRobotics Application EngineerRobotics Software Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Robotics, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering; certifications in robotics or automationBachelor's or Master's in Computer Science, Robotics, or Software Engineering; programming certifications

Job description

Opportunity
PeopleTec is currently seeking a Software Integration Engineer to support our Huntsville, AL location.
PeopleTec is seeking an Integration Engineer to build and maintain the tool connectors and integration layer that link engineering tools into a shared, ontology-aligned data environment supporting a Digital Test Environment, at our Huntsville, AL location. This role is primarily a software engineering position: writing production-quality integration code, APIs, and automation that move data reliably between engineering tools, with domain exposure to MBSE and digital engineering practices.
Responsibilities:
  • Design, build, and maintain tool connectors/adapters that exchange data between engineering tools (MBSE, CAD/PLM, requirements, simulation, and test tools) and a shared, ontology-aligned data layer.
  • Write and maintain integration code against tool APIs and SDKs, applying standard software engineering practices: testing, version control, code review, and maintainable design.
  • Build and orchestrate automated workflows (e.g., in Python) that coordinate multi-tool processes and propagate results between tools and the broader system.
  • Integrate with CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitHub/GitLab, Atlassian) and test automation frameworks so that engineering and test artifacts flow into a shared, traceable system.
  • Build validation and tagging logic to ensure tool data conforms to agreed-upon structure and naming conventions.
  • Diagnose and resolve integration issues across tools with differing data formats, APIs, and update cadences.
  • Partner with the Ontology Architect and other engineering teams to understand data structure requirements and translate them into working integration code.
  • Ramp up on MBSE tools and practices (e.g., Cameo/MagicDraw, SysML) as needed to support tool-specific integration work, with support from domain specialists on the team.

Qualifications
Required Skills/Experience:
  • 10-15 years in systems or software engineering, with demonstrated delivery of MBSE, digital engineering, or tool integration on complex aerospace or defense programs.
  • Demonstrated professional software engineering experience, including building and maintaining integrations, APIs, or automation pipelines in a production environment.
  • Programming proficiency in multiple languages, including JavaScript, Go, and Python
  • Experience integrating systems via REST APIs or equivalent, including authentication, error handling, and data transformation between differing schemas.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitHub/GitLab) and standard DevSecOps practices.
  • Strong debugging and problem-solving skills across distributed, multi-system environments.
  • Comfort learning new tool ecosystems and APIs as needed, including vendor-specific SDKs or plugin frameworks.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
  • An active DoD Secret clearance is required to perform this work. Candidates are required to have an active Secret clearance upon hire (or the able to obtain), and the ability to maintain this level of clearance during their employment.

Education Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (Computer Science, Software Engineering, Systems Engineering, or similar).
  • Master's degree in a related field preferred.

Desired Skills:
  • Experience with MBSE tools (e.g., MagicDraw/Cameo, Rhapsody) and SysML, including plugin or API development.
  • Experience with semantic web or graph data technologies (e.g., OWL, RDF, SPARQL, or property graph query languages).
  • Experience integrating requirements management tools (e.g., DOORS) or PLM systems.
  • Co-simulation or simulation tool integration experience (e.g., MATLAB/Simulink, CFD, FEA, 6DOF).
  • Test automation experience with Robot Framework or equivalent keyword-driven frameworks.
  • Familiarity with the DoD Digital Engineering Strategy, DoDI 5000.97, and ITAR/EAR.
  • Active DoD Secret, Top Secret, or TS/SCI clearance.
