What does a robotics application engineer do?

A Robotics Application Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and implementing robotic systems to automate manufacturing or business processes. They work closely with clients to understand their automation needs, select appropriate hardware and software, and integrate robotics solutions into existing workflows. Their role often includes programming robots, troubleshooting issues, providing technical support, and training end-users. Robotics Application Engineers play a crucial part in improving efficiency, safety, and productivity in industries ranging from automotive to electronics and logistics.

What are some typical challenges a robotics application engineer faces when integrating robots into existing manufacturing processes?

A Robotics Application Engineer often encounters challenges such as ensuring compatibility between new robotic systems and legacy equipment, customizing solutions to meet unique production requirements, and minimizing downtime during installation and testing. Effective communication with cross-functional teams—including production, maintenance, and IT—is vital to address unforeseen technical issues and to ensure seamless integration. Additionally, balancing project timelines with safety and quality standards requires strong project management and problem-solving skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a robotics application engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Robotics Application Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical or electrical engineering, programming (such as Python or C++), and automation principles, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with robotics platforms (like FANUC, ABB, or KUKA), CAD software, and PLC programming, as well as certifications in robotics or automation, are commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and teamwork are crucial soft skills for collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and clients. These skills ensure the successful design, implementation, and support of robotic solutions tailored to complex industrial needs.

Description
Position: Application Engineer
Location: Huntsville, AL
Deshazo Automation is a full-service provider of robotic systems and automation equipment, supplying to a variety of accounts in the automotive, commercial, consumer product, and general industry sectors.
At Deshazo Automation, the principal internal customers of the Applications Engineers are the Account Managers (outside salespeople). The work product of the Application Engineers, and their collaboration with the Account Managers, must support the sales effort while promoting Deshazo and protecting the company's interests.
JOB SUMMARY:
The primary work products of the Application Engineers are concepts, estimates, and proposals for industrial automation cells and systems. Application Engineers work with the Account Managers (and the engineering staff when necessary) to develop sound concepts that address the objectives of the end customer while enabling Deshazo to be competitive in the marketplace. Accurate estimates are key to Deshazo's competitiveness and profitability, so Application Engineers interface with vendors, suppliers, and internal staff to develop cost estimates. Application Engineers compose written proposals to accurately and concisely communicate the concept and pricing to the end customer.
Application Engineers are occasionally called upon to travel to meet with end customers and analyze applications at their facilities.
REQUIREMENTS:
Development of working concepts requires mechanical and electrical aptitude as well as industry knowledge to analyze and understand the end customer's processes, objectives, and budget. Depicting the concept requires some knowledge of mechanical design and drawing, and ultimately involves the use and generation of 3D models to convey the concept to the end customer. Deshazo Automation primarily uses SolidWorks software for designing and concepting.
Development of accurate estimates requires a working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and an understanding of markups, margins, and discounts. Application Engineers use Excel to tabulate and summarize cost data for materials and labor, thereby developing a cost estimate for the proposal and, ultimately, a basis for the project budget when/if the proposal is converted to a sales order.
Development of proposals requires a working knowledge of Microsoft Word, an ability to type efficiently, and a propensity for technical writing. Clarity and conciseness, along with thoroughness and consistently proper grammar, are hallmarks of a quality proposal at Deshazo Automation.
BENEFITS AVAILABLE:
• Medical / Dental / Vision Insurance
• 401k plan with match
• Company-paid short term disability insurance
• Long term disability insurance available
• Company-paid basic life insurance
• Employee assistance program
• Additional life insurance available
