What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Robotics Application Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Robotics Application Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical or electrical engineering, programming (such as Python or C++), and automation principles, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with robotics platforms (like FANUC, ABB, or KUKA), CAD software, and PLC programming, as well as certifications in robotics or automation, are commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and teamwork are crucial soft skills for collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and clients. These skills ensure the successful design, implementation, and support of robotic solutions tailored to complex industrial needs.

What is the difference between Robotics Application Engineer vs Robotics Software Engineer?

AspectRobotics Application EngineerRobotics Software Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Robotics, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering; certifications in robotics or automationBachelor's or Master's in Computer Science, Robotics, or Software Engineering; programming certifications
Work EnvironmentHands-on with hardware, field testing, client sitesSoftware development, coding, simulation, testing in labs or offices
Employer & Industry UsageManufacturing, automation companies, robotics integratorsTech firms, research labs, automation software providers
Common Search & ComparisonOften compared for hardware vs software focus in robotics

The Robotics Application Engineer primarily focuses on integrating and testing robotic systems in real-world environments, working closely with hardware and clients. In contrast, the Robotics Software Engineer concentrates on developing and coding the software that powers robotic systems. Both roles require technical skills but differ in their focus on hardware versus software development.

What are some typical challenges a Robotics Application Engineer faces when integrating robots into existing manufacturing processes?

A Robotics Application Engineer often encounters challenges such as ensuring compatibility between new robotic systems and legacy equipment, customizing solutions to meet unique production requirements, and minimizing downtime during installation and testing. Effective communication with cross-functional teams—including production, maintenance, and IT—is vital to address unforeseen technical issues and to ensure seamless integration. Additionally, balancing project timelines with safety and quality standards requires strong project management and problem-solving skills.

What does a Robotics Application Engineer do?

A Robotics Application Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and implementing robotic systems to automate manufacturing or business processes. They work closely with clients to understand their automation needs, select appropriate hardware and software, and integrate robotics solutions into existing workflows. Their role often includes programming robots, troubleshooting issues, providing technical support, and training end-users. Robotics Application Engineers play a crucial part in improving efficiency, safety, and productivity in industries ranging from automotive to electronics and logistics.

Job description

Build the Path Forward
At Path Robotics, we're attacking a trillion dollar opportunity - doing things that have never been done before to support an industry hurting from a lack of skilled labor. Big, hard problems are what Path tackles every day, and our people are our greatest asset to get that job done. Our intelligent, hardworking team of people do the impossible every single day, yet remain incredibly kind, humble, and always ready to support one another.
We're looking for a Senior Software Engineer to be the architect and caretaker of our codebase, building the systems and tools that make it easy for our ML, CV, and robotics engineers to explore ideas and turn them into production-grade solutions. You'll work closely with our research teams and our data platform team - leveraging their data and ML infrastructure expertise - while focusing on creating a robust, scalable, and developer-friendly foundation.
What You'll Do
  • Architect production-grade Python systems that make experimentation, prototyping, and deployment fast, reliable, and low-friction for research teams.
  • Lead engineering best practices around code quality, testing, modularity, and documentation to keep our codebase clean and maintainable.
  • Build internal tooling, APIs, and libraries that abstract away infrastructure complexity so researchers can focus on solving ML, CV, and robotics problems.
  • Collaborate with the data platform team to integrate data processing, training, and inference capabilities - without owning those pipelines end-to-end.
  • Design CI/CD workflows for research-heavy Python projects to ensure smooth transition from prototype to production.
  • Act as a technical lead within the research team, making key engineering decisions and mentoring others in writing high-quality, maintainable code.
Who You Are
  • Strong background in software architecture and large-scale backend development in any language (C#, Java, Python, etc)
  • Have experience building developer tools, frameworks, or platforms for technical teams.
  • Proven experience with cloud-based development, including designing and managing data storage, persistence, and secure access in cloud environments, and integrating on-premises infrastructure with cloud services.
  • Excited to learn ML/CV/robotics workflows well enough to support them - but your superpower is building great software, not tuning models.
  • Thrive in collaborative environments where you're a bridge between research and production.
Team Player:
  • Startup Energizer: The idea of joining a growing venture-backed startup excites you because you know your work will have an immediate and significant impact.
  • Collaboration Champion: You thrive in a collaborative environment, working closely with others to achieve common goals and drive success.
  • Mentorship Minded: You are passionate about helping peers, fostering best practices, and promoting continuous improvement within the team.
  • Quality Advocate: You are dedicated to maintaining high standards of quality, shipping reliable and high-quality code that you can be proud of, knowing that good quality also enables fast delivery.
Why You'll Love It Here
  • Free lunch every day
  • Flexible PTO
  • Medical, Dental, and Vision insurance
  • 6 weeks 100% paid parental leave plus an additional 6-8 weeks maternity leave for the birthing parent (12-14 weeks total)
  • 401K through Empower
  • Paid Referral Bonus
